Showing: “El Mac: Aerosol Exalted” @ Colorado Springs Fine Art Center

Currently at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, El Mac: Aerosol Exalted is showing through January 10th. The new pieces in the exhibition highlights El Mac’s signature technique with the fat cap, double line ripples that radiate out from his imagery creating an almost calligraphic effect. Included are some older pieces he finished up that were collaborations with fellow Los Angeles-base artist RETNA. Lucky Colorado residents also have the opportunity to purchase a special print between now and the national release ons October 14th. Discuss El Mac here.

Previews: Jim Houser @ Black Book Gallery

On October 17th, Black Book Gallery will be presenting new works from Jim Houser (alongside Issac Tin Wei Lin) in their Denver showspace. This particular body of work features some interesting assemblage pieces from Houser that mirror some of the installations he has created in the past but smaller. Still present are the Philadelphia-based artist distinctive visual language featuring selected text and iconographic imagery, but created with a fresh perspective and more personal scale. Openings: Soey Milk – “PIDA” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Earlier this month, Soey Milk brought her work up north to Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco for a solo entitled PIDA / 피다. The title references a Korean term that means to blossom or to become something else, something that applies to her continued development as an artist and her experimentation with technique. On display were a diverse selection of works including oil paintings and graphite drawings, some with embedded objects incorporated into the pieces. Releases: Ian Francis – “Reflective Encounter” & “Two People Feed A Lion” Prints

Those who enjoyed the stunning new works from Ian Francis (featured) for a showing earlier this summer (covered) at Lazarides had an opportunity earlier this week to purchase some prints of images seen at the exhibition. The gallery released limited editions (run of 20) featuring the British artist’s masterful melding of photorealistic and abstract imagery through their webstore. Two People Feed A Lion has already soldout but Reflective Encounter (seen above) is still available here. Streets: Faith47 (New York)

Earlier this week, Faith47 finished a mural in East Harlem on the corner of 103 Street and Madison Avenue entitled Estamos Todos Los Que Cabemos, a part of MonumentArt, presented by the La Marqueta Retoña initiative. The wall was painted as part of the project focused on the issue of immigration with the imagery of migratory birds chosen for the fact their their patterns ignore human borders on a map. Album Covers: RETNA x Justin Bieber – “Purpose”

Continuing the long run of album covers designed by artists covered here on AM through the years, RETNA (featured) was recently revealed as the artist to work with Justin Bieber on his new album. The unlikely collaboration between the notorious LA writer and the Canadian pop singer features an image of Beiber overlaid with RETNA’s instantly recognizable graffiti script. Purpose is scheduled for release on November 12th. Discuss RETNA here.

Streets: Alexis Diaz, DALeast, Borondo / Lodz Walls (Poland)

Recently in Poland, Alexis Diaz (seen above), DALeast, and Borondo stopped by to paint some murals in the city of Lodz. Curated by Michał Bieżyński, the new works for Lodz Murals are a continuation of a public arts program for the third largest city in the country. City dwellers and online admirers will now be able to enjoy the detailed patchwork of Diaz, iconic kinetic wave from DAL, and the painterly skills of Borondo. Photo credit: Maciej Stempij.

Previews: Yoskay Yamamoto / Giant Robot Biennale 4 @ JANM

Opening on October 10th at the Japanese American National Museum is Giant Robot Biennale 4, a group exhibition featuring works from artists curated by Eric Nakamura (interviewed), the man behind the Giant Robot brand. The fourth iteration (see 2009, 2012) of the show looks to be the most ambitious yet featuring artists like James Jean, Jim Lee, Kim Jung Gi, Katsuya Terada, Edwin Ushiro, and Yumi Sakagawa, among others. Upcoming: Nathan Ota – “Four Corners” @ KP Projects//MKG

Nathan Ota will be opening a new solo this weekend at KP Projects//MKG in Los Angeles entitled Four Corners, alongside a showing from Andrew Hem. The new body of work from the locally based painter, illustrator, and educator examines the role of the artist’s studio as a refuge and space that allows safe observation of the madness of the outside world. Currently, Heath Ceramics in San Francisco has an amazing new set of works on display from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) at their Boiler Room space.
