Streets: Interesni Kazki / Waone – “Eternal Recurrence” (Sicily)

After sharing one side of the silo painted by AEC, one half of the Interesni Kazki, we now have a look at the effort from his partner Waone. Keeping with the theme of Greek mythology, the Ukranian artist added imagery on his side of the structure that reference the Triskelion, a symbol of the sun and the passage of time, but also the symbol of Trinacria, Helios’ Island, or now modern Sicily. Helios was the solar god and also guardian of oaths, and responsible for he gift of sight. Discuss […]

Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s Food Face Portraits As Sculptures By Philip Haas

Currently (thru October 18th) at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Philip Haas has installed his larger than life sculptures that take Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s famous face portraits (made from fruits, vegetables, flowers) into the third dimension. Taking inspiration from the Renaissance painter’s The Four Seasons set of paintings, Haas has impressively recreated the characters in 360 degrees and at fifteen feet high and placed them on the south lawn of the museum. Make sure you head inside to check out the smaller scale models as well if you plan to visit. […]

Upcoming: Eric Joyner @ Corey Helford Gallery

Fans of Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be pleased to hear that he will be having another solo in September at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles after his last one there in 2013 (covered). Hopefully, this new painting he is working on will be part of the new body of work as we are quite smitten by his robot police lineups and this newest one looks to be shaping up nicely. Of course, we will also be looking forward the Bay Area-based artist’s predilection for painting […]

Streets: Conor Harrington (Warsaw)

Continuing to share his “fight club” imagery with the public, Conor Harrington (interviewed) recently completed a new mural for Street Art Doping in Warsaw. Painted over several days, the fresh piece features some of the Irish artist’s recognizable colonial figures getting ready for some one-on-one fisticuffs. Other artists slated to make their mark in the Polish capital include 1010, Ernest Zacharevic, 108, and CT. Discuss Conor Harrington here.

Showing: Snarkitecture / Daniel Arsham – “The Beach” @ National Building Museum

For those who have a chance to visit Washington DC through September 7th, make sure you stop by the National Building Museum to check out an immersive installation from Snarkitecture. Cofounders Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham have imagined up a beach with an ocean of 750,000 recyclable plastic balls. The monochromatic and minimalistic installation certainly mirrors the aesthetic seen in many of their previous projects and is certainly something visitors of all ages will enjoy. Previews: Brian Mashburn – “Witness” @ Thinkspace Gallery

As a followup to his small show earlier this year (covered) at Thinkspace Gallery, Brian Mashburn will be taking over the project room with a more extensive body of work starting this Saturday, July 18th. Witness will see more exotic creatures join the North Carolina-based artist’s distinctive visual world where animals are posed in the foreground against the hazy background of industrial degradation. Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss Brian Mashburn here.

Streets: Interesni Kazki / AEC – “Odysseus Escape From Polyphemus” (Sicily)

We are a sucker for murals painted on silos. Something about the curvature of the surface the awesome way the imagery usually stands out from the surrounding background takes things up a notch. This latest example is from AEC, one half of the Interesni Kazki duo, entitled Odysseus Escape From Polyphemus. The piece is a play on the famous Greek myth as you can see from the sheep and references the topic of relations between politics and mafia in the port area of Catania, Sicily where the mural […]
