Upcoming: Hideaki Kawashima – “Back And Forth” @ Richard Heller Gallery

This Saturday (October 18), the Richard Heller Gallery all be hosting the second solo showing from Hideaki Kawashima in the United States (see 2011). Entitled Back And Forth, the new body of work includes portraits of boys and girls, familiar to those who saw his last show although presented in a simpler more raw form in this new exhibition. Also, to round out the show, the Tokyo-based artist has included a new “head” series of paintings. Streets: Tom Fruin’s Stained Glass House @ Brooklyn Bridge Park

As a followup to his stained glass watchtower in 2012 (covered), Tom Fruin created a new installation last month at the Brooklyn Bridge Park for the Dumbo Arts Festival. Entitled Kolonihavehus, the house created from plexiglass was a hit with visitors during the day and at night, although it was particularly stunning lit up once the sun went down. Temporarily inhabited by duo CoreAct, attendees of the event were able to see the art structure enhanced by a collaborative physical performance. Via Colossal.

Releases: James Jean – TMNT Figures

Going back to his comic book roots, James Jean (interviewed) revealed a project over the weekend at New York Comic Con that he has been working on with Good Smile. The Japanese manufacturer of hobby products is teaming up with Nickelodeon and Jean to create new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures based on his illustrations. Pre-orders will start up in November beginning with Leonardo, with the remaining three set to be released in next year. Via Hypebeast. Discuss James Jean here.

Streets: DALeast (Poland)

Continuing his assault on walls around the world, DALeast (interviewed) continued to paint his creatures that appear at home in their urban environment. This newest mural, painted with his signature kinetic brushstrokes, was created for the ongoing Urban Forms Gallery public works series in Lodz, the 33rd piece in the whole project. Upcoming: Baby Tattooville 2015 – Mark Ryden & Marion Peck Surrealist Ball

At the conclusion of Baby Tattooville last Sunday morning, attendees had the customary brunch at the Mission Inn before grabbing their Gift Bags and heading their separate ways. While they were finishing their selections from the impressive spread, ringleader Bob Self stood up to make some announcements but the final comments came as a total surprise. Streets: Phlegm / Empty Walls (South Wales)

A couple of weeks ago, Phlegm traveled down to South Wales for the Empty Walls Festival where he painted a large mural on Wood Road right next to the main bus station. Featuring his signature characters acting out the old Welsh tradition of Mari Lwyd, the exaggerated imagery filled with local flavor is a welcome addition to the area. Upcoming: Égrégore @ Yves Laroche

Starting on October 30th, Yves Laroche in Montreal will be hosting a massive group exhibition entitled Égrégore. The term refers to a kind of group mind which is created when people consciously come together for a common purpose and was used in relation to the Montreal Surrealists, best known as Les Automatistes in the 40s. Openings: Usugrow – “Inkflow” @ Fifty24SF

Over the weekend, Fifty24SF hosted the opening for Usugrow’s new solo up in the Bay Area. Featuring his calligraphy on the walls as well in the pieces for sale, Inkflow marks his return to the San Francisco art scene after showing there in 2007 and participating in a group show with his Shinganist crew back in 2009 (covered). Streets: Shepard Fairey (Toronto)

After a recent set of murals realized in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philly, New York, Berlin, and Johannesburg, the tour concluded in Toronto for Shepard Fairey (featured) and the Obey crew. Some of the main pieces were created at the The Gladstone Hotel & Tattoo if you are local and want to hunt these down.
