Recap: Futura x Crooks & Castles – “LEWDS” Launch @ Known Gallery

Last week, the Known Gallery featured the release party (with support from Hennessy) for a new line from Crooks & Castles designed by Futura. Entitled LEWDS, the collection (which can be seen in more detail here) featured the familiar text and atom motif from the NYC graffiti legend while paying homage to Christopher “Lewds” Natalio, the late Marketing Director of the streetwear brand. Currently at The Boston Button Factory, Berlin-based Jaybo Monk has a new show up through July 14th, with an official reception scheduled for June 25th (7-10pm). Upcoming: Robert Montgomery – “Above The Streets” @ Art Share L.A.

This weekend will kick off a new project from London-based artist Robert Montgomery (featured) on the streets of Los Angeles. Presented by Art Share L.A., the poetic text-based work from Montgomery will be featured on billboards around the City of Angels as well as seen at a gala put on in his honor on June 29th (details & tickets here). Openings: Kazuki Takamatsu – “Spiral of Emotions” @ CHG Circa

Over the weekend, art fans in Los Angeles saw the return of Kazuki Takamatsu and his gradient map textured portaiture in a new show entitled Spiral of Emotions. Exhibiting at CHG Circa (see 2013 at the sister gallery), the Japanese artist brought with him a new set of glowing paintings featuring ghostly silhouettes of children and adolescents, often intermingled with symbols of death and violence. Ai Weiwei – “Leg Gun” Meme

Chinese artist & activist Ai Weiwei once again showed his acumen at utilizing social media to get his message across with the recent online craze that has been labeled by some as the “Leg Gun” meme. AWW set things off by posting a photo of himself on his Instagram account using his leg as a gun and has since posted more of himself as well as others mimicking the pose with their own variations and styles. Previews: Jim Houser – “Night Got Quiet – Not Quite Light” @ FFDG

Next month in San Francisco, Jim Houser will be opening his new show entitled Night Got Quiet – Not Quite Light at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery. The Philadelphia-based artist has prepared 15 mixed media paintings as well as his always intriguing site-specific installations. Streets: Shepard Fairey (Charleston)

Last month, we brought you photos from Shepard Fairey’s (featured) big museum exhibition in Charleston at The Halsey. As you may have guessed from the nature of his work, he also put in time on the streets. Working with his Obey crew, he pasted up his iconic Andre the Giant as well as other familiarly treated imagery up around town. Openings: Futura – “Introspective” @ Magda Danysz (Paris)

Earlier this week, graffiti legend Futura created new work for a Paris show at Magda Danysz Gallery entitled Introspective. Drawing from many of the series of works that have defined his career, the NYC-based artist presented street influenced abstractions, figurative work featuring his pointman character, and paintings that included his famous atom motif. Rounding out the exhibition were a selection of manipulated photos similar to what fans have seen him post on his Instagram for a while now. Previews: Michael Carson @ Arcadia Contemporary

This Thursday night (June 19th), Arcadia Contemporary in New York will be hosting the opening for Michael Carson’s new exhibition.
