Streets: Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada – “Terrestrial Series / Mama Cash” (Amsterdam)

Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada was recently invited to Amsterdam to work on a piece for the International Human Rights Day that helped to launch Vogelvrije Vrouwen (Defend women who defend human rights!). This campaign raises awareness to the plight of Mesoamerican women who are illegally targeted and terrorized for defending human rights in that region and was commissioned by feminist foundation Mama Cash. The large-scale land portrait that spanned almost two football fields (created with the help of 80 volunteers) is part of the Cuban American artist’s ongoing Terrestrial Series. He states […]

It’s time to start winding down our Basel Week Miami coverage here on AM with another look at the PULSE art fair (highlights here). Rewind: Dec 31 – Jan 6

For this week’s video Rewind, we start things off with news that starting Wednesday and running through Feb. 5, about 3,000 New York City taxis will feature a 30-second video from Ryan McGinley. The short clip, called Varuo, is gleaned from footage from the photographer and director’s video for the Icelandic band Sigur Ros (seen below) and shows a girl skipping barefoot through the streets of NYC with gold glitter streaming from her hair. Other videos you may want to watch: A look at Eric […]

Streets: World Roundup (Dec 31 – Jan 6)

We start this month’s survey of street art with this sweet new piece from El Mac painted on what looks to be the side of a train car. The LA-based artist painted the portrait as a tribute to his friend and gifted photographer Estevan Oriol. Coincidentally, we shared a portrait of photographer Martha Cooper with you painted by Os Gemeos only earlier today. Other worthy walls featured this week come from M-City – India, Mar – California, ROA – Argentina (source), Sokram – Spain (source), Waone […]

Takashi Murakami Studio Look

With his recent entry into the Instagram world (@takashipom), Takashi Murakami has offered a rare look into his life for fans of his work. Of particular interest for us has been a glimpse into his huge studio space and his artistic process where the Japanese artist has been hard at work on a series of new paintings. For what show it’s hard to tell, but perhaps some will be headed to Galerie Perrotin for his solo opening in May, timed slightly after the release of […]

Upcoming: “I’ll Love You ‘Til The End Of The World” @ Roq La Rue

One of the first worthy group shows of the year comes from the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle (opening January 11th). Featuring work inspired by a play on what the mayans were expecting at the end of last year, artist including Camille Rose Garcia, Chris Berens, Femke Hiemstra, John Brophy, Martin Wittfooth (last image), Jean-Pierre Roy, Marco Mazzoni, Scott Musgrove (above), Eric Fortune (2nd image), Sail, Laurie Lee Brom, Sarah Dolby, Jane Kenoyer, and Nicola Verlato will be contributing pieces for the exhibition. Take […]

Streets: Slinkachu (Russia)

It appears cold weather hasn’t deterred the skills and intentions of street miniaturist Slinkachu. The London-based artist continues to hit up major metropolitan areas around the world (the theme of his last solo show) – this time in Gorky Park (Moscow, Russia). Looks like his tiny people sculptures should watch out for giants aka humans. Discuss Slinkachu here.

Upcoming: Andrew Schoultz – “Fall Out” @ Mark Moore Gallery

On January 12th, the Mark Moore Gallery will be presenting Fall Out, a solo showing from San Francisco-based artist, Andrew Schoultz. Along with original works featuring his kinetic imagery and motifs, Schoultz will be creating some of the gallery installations (painting, sculpture, drawing, and collage) he has been known for. Referencing interactions with institutions like a public civic center, museum, or church, attendees will be albe to sit on handcrafted benches as they are confronted with his imagery ripe with sociopolitical implications – including his recent series of American flags stamped […]

Preview: Aakash Nihalani – “Portal” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Coming up on the 12th, the solo at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery from Haroshi that we shared news with you earlier will be accompanied by a new body of work from Aakash Nihalani. Both artists share a three-dimensionality to their aesthetic so it should be an interesting pairing. For Nihlani’s part, entitled Portal, the showing will feature his increasingly intricate geometric forms which always seem to have a playful element to them. Perhaps this is due to the interactive nature of his work on the […]

Openings: “Crucifixion” @ Corey Helford Gallery
