Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever (2011)” @ Marciano Art Foundation

For Angeleno’s who missed Yayoi Kusuma’s turn at The Broad (covered) last year, here is your second chance. With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever (2011) features the Japanese artist’s penchant for polka dots in an immersive installation with large fiberglass-reinforced plastic tulips surrounded by floor-to-ceiling red dots. Ranging from over 7 to almost 10 feet tall, the three oversized flowers reinforces the illusion that the viewer has shrunk down to miniature size, an effect amplified by the repeating dots. Recap: Joakim Ojanen – “Year of the Dog” @ Richard Heller Gallery

An exhibition entitled Year of the Dog recently closed at the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles, their second solo from Joakim Ojanen. Featuring a comprehensive selection of the Stockholm-based artist’s ceramics, bronzes, charcoal drawings, and oil paintings, the show focuses in on Ojanen’s cast of characters that seem to be taken from a children’s book or Adult Swim cartoon. The paintings are somewhat abstract and the sculptures are loose, expertly done with a child-like innocence yet unsettling at the same time. Photo credit: Artsy, Richard McKinnon, and Ethan […]

Openings: Faile & Bast – “Deluxx Fluxx” @ The Belt (Detroit)

Over the weekend, Deluxe Fluxx opened in a new permanent home at The Belt in Detroit, a downtown alleyway with art curated by the Library Street Collective. The immersive art installation & arcade by Brooklyn-based artist duo Faile and artist Bast has traveled to multiple locations around the world, but will be putting down its roots in the Motor City as a bar and music venue. Those hunting for the location should look on the north side of the alley for a door with neon X’s, which […]

Showing: Amabouz Taturo – “A Doll’s House” @ Palais de Tokyo

Recently, those walking by entrance to the Palais de Tokyo in Paris have had their attention drawn to a life size dollhouse installation by Amabouz Taturo (a pseudonym for Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi). The piece is part of the ongoing Childhood: Another banana day for the dream-fish exhibition (title take from a story by J.D. Salinger), that sees a good twenty international artists give their take the theme of the show. Three-level doll’s house constructed from iron and wood can be walked through by guests and features […]

Showing: Alex Chinneck – “Open To The Public” (England)

Over the weekend, another mind-boggling installation was completed by Alex Chinneck in England entitled Open To The Public. Building on the British artist’s series of impossible architectural creations, the abandoned 1960s office building (Brundett House, Tannery Lane, Ashford, Kent, TN23 1PN) was transformed with two enormous zippers “unzipping” the structure. Head over to see it soon if you are in the UK as it will be demolished shortly… Photo credit: Mark Wilmot & Charles Emerson (via Designboom). Discuss Alex Chinneck here.

Featuring several new paintings and 16 stenciled paintings on paper, the solo by the artist from Riverside, California will be part of a museum-wide theme of eight individual exhibitions that make up The Robot Show. Streets: El Mac (US-Mexico border)

Commissioned by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), El Mac recently completed a mural at the US-Mexico border entitled Abuelita de Presidio (Desert Rose). The piece was painted on a ten-story high water tank in the remote border community of Presidio, Texas, facing its southern neighbor Ojinaga, Chihuahua. Visible from both countries, the portrait featuring his distinct style was based on a 62-year-old Presidio resident who runs a secondhand shop just a stone’s throw from the International Port of Entry who was originally from Mexico. The Los Angeles-based artist further explains – […]

On August 4th, Spoke Art’s location in NYC will be hosting The Moleskine Project VII, the seventh iteration of the group show curated by artist Rodrigo Luff and gallery owner Ken Harman. The concept behind the show once again is to create a piece of art on the pages of the ubiquitous moleskin notebook used by many artists for sketches, to record ideas, and for studies. Participating artists include: Rebecca Mason Adams, Sergio Barrale, Stephen Bauman, Kelsey Beckett, Daniel Bilodeau, Stephanie Brown, Juan Francisco Casas, Sam […]

Known for her flickering superimposed portraits, Garant has a perfect new theme to match her imagery, capturing the feeling of being […]
