With our overview of the main fair done, we now move on to the satellite fairs of Frieze week in New York. The Pulse fair was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea and featured sixty national and international galleries, presenting exhibitions that span across all media, from works on paper, painting, and sculpture, to performance, installation, and video art. New York Times & Artists Pay Tribute to Maurice Sendak

With the great Maurice Sendak leaving us last week and heading off to Where the Wild Things Are, the interwebs have been buzzing with respect for the inspirational artist and illustrator. The New York Times, for their SundayReview section, asked artists Geoff McFetridge (work seen above), Gary Taxali, Art Spiegelman, Tomi Ungerer, Bob Staake, Marc Rosenthal and Jon Klassen to create artwork to pay tribute to Sendak as well as to share some of their thoughts. Streets: Banksy (London)

A statement on child labour in the UK has appeared on the side of Poundland on Whymark Avenue in London with an underaged worker hard at work with a sewing machine creating some bunting (perhaps for the upcoming Queen’s Jubilee?). Although not confirmed as of yet by Banksy, the stenciling and style are all strongly reminiscent of Mr. B’s handiwork. Photo credit: the lonely villein.

Last weekend, deep in the heart of Los Angeles, the Known Gallery unveiled the latest work from the locally based duo, Dabs Myla. Break Night Lovers featured drawings, paintings, art objects, and a whimsical installation mimicking the inside of house complete with a fridge, painted stove, TV, table, chairs, and more. Executed in the Aussie couple’s signature cartoonish style, the showspace looked like the set of an animated feature where inanimate objects came to life whether painted on walls or in a three-dimensional form. The motor city has become one of the hotspots for street activity recently as the tanking economy has ironically led to more abandoned buildings facilitating the rise of public art. Art Focus: Carmichael Collective

This week’s artist we are introducing to you is the Carmichael Collective, (a creative company located in Minneapolis, MN) and their humorous street interventions. Although they have a diverse set of works, including Urban Plant Tags the #LivingTrophy, our Art Focus is on their Bug Memorials. Featuring pimped out funeral paraphernalia for dead insects, the memorials include portraits, flowers, candles, and more.
