Streets: Blu (Buenos Aires) Part II

After bringing you photos a new political and provocative mural form Blu about a week ago, here is another set of pics of another mural painted by the Italian street savant in Buenos Aires. This time around, the piece on the side of a building depicts an an image of the globe slowing disintegrating like a jigsaw puzzle with the pieces being interconnecting humans. Showing: Swoon – “Murmuration” @ Black Rat Projects

Earlier this month, Swoon’s (interviewed) first London solo exhibition opened up at the Black Rat Projects. She has spent three long weeks transforming the gallery space with sculptural paper installations that she collectively entitled Mumuration. The project utilized imagery from much of her previous work including her Art in the Streets install at the MOCA, Thalassa at the NOMA, Anthropocene Extinction at the Boston (ICA). Anish Kapoor – “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” Completed

Anish Kapoor’s (with help from structural designer Cecil Balmond) twisting tower next to the Olympic stadium in London that we first mentioned last year has been completed ahead of the summer games for 2012. Dubbed the “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” due to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, the chairman of ArcelorMittal, investing £19.6 million in the £22.7 million project, the 114.5 metres tall looping sculpture will dominate the skyline as UK’s tallest structure and feature two observation floors, a 455-step spiral staircase, an elevator, and a restaurant. Earlier this month, the Roq La Rue hosted the third rendition of the Lush Life group show. As usual, a impressive lineup of artists (many who have showed with or will show in the future with the Seattle gallery) joined in on the fun including Femke Hiemstra, Chris Berens, Josh Keyes, John Brophy, Travis Louie, Marco Mazzoni, Jessica Joslin, Joseph Park, Mia Araujo, and more. Streets: Titi Freak (Japan)

The Brazil-based Titi Freak (Hamilton Yokota) recently made a trip to the Ishinomaki, Miyagi in Japan for a project involving the painting of some temporary dwellings with people in the community. Made possible by The Japan Foundation and the Embassy of Brazil in Japan, the endeavor was meant to have an empowering effect for the residents and featured workshops for inhabitants, solo works by the graffiti artist, as well as collaboration murals. Basel Week Miami ’11: Jason Shawn Alexander – “Undertow” @ 101/exhibit

Among the abundance of standalone exhibitions that AM attended during Art Basel Week Miami, one that stood out was Jason Shawn Alexander’s showing at 101/exhibit. Undertow came highly recommended by our friends at Hi-Fructose, and when we made it to the opening we could see why. The LA-based artist’s figurative work was large-scale, gritty, full of emotion & raw energy, and is certainly something you should check out if you are in the area through February 8th. Travelogue: Kelsey Brookes – RVCA in Hawaii

Recently RVCA rented four houses on the North Shore in Hawaii and put an eclectic group of people together including Julian Schnabel, Pat Tenore, Lindsay Lohan, and Estevan Oriol among many others. One of those also invited was painter Kelsey Brookes who took advantage of the setting and time to do things he loved – eat, surf, and paint. At the end of their time together, Kelsey cut apart a larger painting of small faces and gifted everyone a little piece. More photos after the jump…

To start off our summary of walls this week, we get news that Ludo has been in Paris getting some new fake xray ads like this piece with a hand skeleton seen inside a mosquito. Other walls seen after the jump include a collaboration between Remi/Rough and LX One (Miami), Ethos (Sydney), Liqen (Mexico), Know Hope (Miami), Ever (Miami), Kid Zoom (Australia), Anthony Lister (Australia), Agostino (Italy), Merge Invisible (Hungary), and 2-Hands (Portugal).

A couple weeks ago, the husband and wife duo known as Kozyndan opened their newest solo show at the Bold Hype Gallery in New York. Entitled Their Bones Are Coral Made, the new work blended their two loves – the ocean & all things aquatic and the risque. Art Focus: Sean Edward Whelan

Based in Japan, Sean Whelan’s medium of choice is pencil drawing which typically center around his fascination temples and shrines. By grouping hundreds of little Japanese buildings, he is able to build complex amalgamations forming figurative shapes and ideas. His incredibly detailed and time-intensive process is what caught AM’s attention for this week’s Art Focus. More images of his work after the jump…
