Baby Tattooville 2010 Lineup

It looks as though the first five artists have been quietly announced for 2010’s Baby Tattooville with some pretty big names to start with including Robert Williams, Suzanne Williams, Michael Hussar, COOP, and William Stout. Always one of our highlight events of the year, the art retreat has definitely been a good time to hang out and get to know some of our favorite artists better.  Check out all our coverage from the last two years here. We’ll let you know when the other names […]

Openings: Trustocorp – “An Overt Display of Mischief and Mayhem” @ Brooklyn Brothers Gallery

Trustocorp’s debut show, “An Overt Display of Mischief and Mayhem” (previewed) opened on Thursday night at the Brooklyn Brothers Gallery to an enthusiastic crowd. The response was no doubt related to the collective’s recent street sign posting spree throughout the country, with the map seen above specifically marking the locations New York forming the shape of an overtly raised middle finger. The exhibition also featured the specially branded products that have been inserted surreptitiously onto store shelves, the custom street signs, as well as a […]

Video: Ed Templeton – “The Cemetery of Reason” @ S.M.A.K.

Ed Templeton recently opened his biggest museum show ever in Belgium at S.M.A.K with over 1200 works from all over the world serving as a mid-career survey for the American photographer and contemporary artist. “The Cemetery of Reason” features old and new work including paintings, photographs, silkscreens, and painted objects, many of which are arranged into some pretty awesome clusters. Take a look at some opening footage as well as Templeton’s commentary on the new exhibition. Via Hypebeast.

Openings: Jeff Gillette – “Dismayland” @ Copro Gallery

Last Saturday night marked the opening of Jeff Gillette’s solo at Copro Gallery, “Dismayland”. If you made the obvious connection between the name he chose for the show and the happiest place on earth, then you would be right. The imagery the Orange County-based artist features in this new body of work includes Snow White, Cinderella, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and other Disney characters scattered in what looks to be the slums of some third world country or perhaps some post-apocalyptic alternate universe leading to […]

Teaser: Escif – “Around The Wall” @ Pictures On Walls

Spanish street artist Escif will be visiting the UK for a solo show at Pictures On Walls (POW) opening April 17th. As you can see from the image above, he’s already in town working on the streets in preparation for his “Around The Wall” show. Take a look at a couple promotional videos released by POW after the jump…

Video: Barry McGee for SFMOMA by The Creative Lives

Barry McGee recently opened a show for the 75th Anniversary of SFMOMA back in January (covered). Now comes further insight into the process as The Creative Lives has come up with fascinating video interview with and mini-documentary with the elusive street and contemporary artist. Discuss Barry Mcgee here.

Showing: Damien Hirst – “Cornucopia @ Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

Is it just us or is it a little ironic that Damien Hirst is showing at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, especially since included is one of his famous formaldehyde shark tanks (although this current specimen, a great white was apparently already dead, unlike the tiger shark that rocketed him to fame in 1992)? As we first told you about here, Hirst’s show, which will run through September, is a retrospective of his most famous pieces including spin paintings, skulls, and formaldehyde pieces, but none […]

Openings: Banksy – “Exit Through The Gift Shop” LA premiere

AM was lucky enough to be able to attend the Los Angeles premiere of Banksy’s “Exit Through The Gift Shop” earlier tonight at the historic Los Angeles Theatre. With the art community on high alert, the cavernous and exquisitely beautiful theater was filled (at least the first floor) with collectors, celebrities, pseudocelebrities, and knowledgeable street art fans. As we guessed in an earlier post, no expense was spared for this important opening with major media outlets on hand to witness the many installations on site […]

Streets: Banksy in LA (Part II)

As we suspected, Banksy wasn’t done with Los Angeles after the first stencil (security guard with Koons dog) he put up yesterday. Seen above is a newly discovered piece in downtown LA that is raising expectations for the special premiere of his documentary tonight in a secret location. As opposed to his premiere in NY (btw, we are giving a poster away in that article), the Bristol Bomber actually appears to be in town for this screening and by not announcing where it will be […]

Openings: Amanda Visell – “Primeval Love” @ the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles

As mentioned in our preview, Amanda Visell’s exhibition, “Primeval Love” opened last Friday at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Because of the vintage feel to her paintings and the imagery she decided to work with, the show blended in perfectly with the surroundings. In fact, as you can see from the photo above, this was definitely one of most unique and eye-catching settings we have seen for an exhibition in a while. More images after the jump…
