Openings: Brooklyn Block Party @ Ad Hoc Gallery

The “Brooklyn Block Party” opened last Friday at Ad Hoc Art with a healthy lineup featuring C. Damage Elbowtoe, David Ellis, Gaia, Mike Houston, Imminent Disaster, Martin Mazorra, Dennis McNett, Richard Mock, Judith Supine, and Swoon.  The exhibition was an interesting change of pace for each artist as the show dictated they include hand cut blocks along with prints pulled from each block.  The theme of the show was executed nicely by all artists involved and really helped pull their diverse styles together into a […]

Openings: Jeff Soto @ Riverside Art Museum

Riverside native Jeff Soto returned to his roots last night for his first museum show entitled “Turning in Circles” (previewed). Judging from the great turnout, his hometown liked what they saw.  There were familiar faces as well as many new ones, with a large number of fans making the trek east from the greater LA area for this epic show. Everyone walked away impressed by the scale and quality of this mostly new body of work – for good reason as Jeff poured his heart […]

Openings: Matt Dangler & Yumiko Kayukawa @ M Modern

Headed out to Palm Springs last night to attend the opening of Matt Dangler’s “Out From the Whirlwind” (previewed) and Yumiko Kayukawa’s “The Last 34” (previewed).  Matt’s paintings looked to be getting more detailed with this body of work.  He also spent time explaining some of the symbolism and geometry behind each piece leaving us impressed with the amount of planning and thought he gave to each painting.  Yumiko’s show highlighted many of the endangered species around the world including polar bears, elephants and leopards.  […]

Release Party: Yoskay Yamamoto’s Koibito

Last night, we stopped by Munky King on Melrose to attend the release party for Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) Koibito figure. There were two colorways – gold and black (edition of 500) and a Munky King exclusive translucent-smoke colorway (edition of 150) – both seen below. There was also a raffle (one ticket per purchase) for an original painting and other prizes!  Also for sale were various prints and custom koibitos… More after the jump.

Interviews: Jeff Soto

Jeff Soto’s first museum show “Turning in Circles” (previewed) is set to open this Saturday, December 13th at the Riverside Art Museum. He has been hard at work on this show for over a year now and it promises to be an epic one. We sat down with him to talk a little about the show after the jump…

Preview: Yumiko Kayukawa @ M Modern

Japan native Yumiko Kayukawa’s show “The Last 34” opens tomorrow night concurrently with Matt Dangler’s solo at M Modern Gallery. Yumiko is known for her fashionable women, colors, and Japanese motifs. For this show, she seems to have make use of more animal clusters – we love the composition in the piece seen above. More images after the jump.

Update: Hush

Hush recently posted some pictures of him working in his studio on a new painting called “Butterfly Girl thru Graf.” This piece will be showing at the Urban Angel group show “2” opening tomorrow. He will also be participating in the “12 Days of Xmas“ show coming up in Bristol this Friday (image of his piece for that as well as studio pics after the jump).

Interviews: Nicoletta Ceccoli

Nicoletta’s show “By the Time You Are Real” (teased) opens this Saturday, December 13th at Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchestor, UK. She brings us seventeen wonderful new paintings to enjoy of which we obtained two more new images (thanks to Richard Goodall) since AM last talked about her. We sat down with the Merino based artist to chat a little about her influences, her illustration work, and her plans for 2009 among other things after the jump…

This release seems to coincide with his show “Ghosts of the Barbary Coast” that opened recently … head over here if you are interested in purchase. More pics after the jump.

Preview: This is China show

Although we have been enamored with Japanese artists for a while now, recently we have been increasingly interested in the Chinese art scene.  It seems more and more intriguing artists are popping up on various sites…  If you add to that, the fact that western artists seem to be showing more in Asia, the time seems ripe for the kind of crossover show that is opening this weekend in Seattle. “This is China” (teased), put together by Red Star Press at the location formerly known […]
