Studio Visits / Previews: Jon Bocksel – “SEA OF BLASPHEMY” @ Curio

Over a half decade ago, I was introduced to this art school kid they called Bocksel. At the time, he was running around creating innovative art films, making cleaver t-shirts (with underlining political undertones), crafting skateboards into obscure shapes, and wheat pasting on his Friday nights while his peers were playing beer pong. Recently, I stopped by to visit Jon Bocksel’s studio to say hello as he prepared for his upcoming group shown, SEA OF BLASPHEMY at Curio. These days, Jon Boxel is still hard at […]

Takashi Murakami, whose enormous studio you recently got a glimpse of, has announced a new watch he designed with independent Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka. Preview: Adam Friedman – “Space and Time, and Other Mysterious Aggregations” @ Eleanor Harwood Gallery

With the opening set for January 25th at the Eleanor Harwood Gallery, the time is right to preview Adam Friedman’s newest body of work. Space and Time, and Other Mysterious Aggregations will feature the Portland-based artist’s signature surreal geologic forms, created through the process and painting and mixed media work. He describes his imagery thusly – “I paint symbols and tropes that we comprehend as landscape; mountains, sunsets, etc. But I relish the mystery of the natural world, and I’m curious what happens when we view nature through […]

Showing: Michael Johansson – “Still Lifes” @ Flat Gallery

Currently showing at the Flat Gallery in Milan is a solo from Sweden-based artist Michael Johansson entitled Still Lifes. On view through February 24th, the exhibition features a continuation of the conceptual artist’s three-dimensional work that deals with ideas of space and form. The re-purposing of everyday objects into perfect cubes (among other sculptural installations) arranged by different hues strikes a visually intriguing balance throughout the showspace. Look for upcoming shows at the Konsthallen Trollhättan in Sweden and Vigeland-museet in Norway. Via Designboom.

It seems that it’s been over four years since José Parlá has been able to commune with his UK fans in London (covered here) at a solo showing. Come February 1st, this will be rectified with his exhibition entitled Broken Language, held at a new gallery – Haunch of Venison. Presenting new paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculptures filled with rich urban textures and his characteristic script. He states: “For most of my life I have experienced being in transition and migration. This feeling allows me to bring […]
