Art Focus: Laurent Craste

For this weekend’s Art Focus feature, we wanted to point you to the work of Laurent Craste. The French sculptor creates these ornate porcelain pieces that would be classic works except that he literally “throws a wrench in things” by having various items like baseball bats, axes, knives, nails and more embedded in them. By utilizing the typical decorative item as an indicator for social status, instruments of political power, and demonstrations of ostentatious luxury, the Montreal-based artist is able to make a statement with […]

Preview: Quam Odunsi – “Anachronistic Capture: Motion & Stills” @ Design Matters

Technology moves forward at an ever-increasing pace every day and for visual art and capture, most of the time the latest slick digital innovation and highest number of megapixels do not provide the best picture. Analog film, however antiquated and labor-intensive in procedure, produces an accurate image and provides the viewer with a warm nostalgic feeling. In Anachronistic Capture: Motion & Stills, opening March 29 (and curated by AM’s Khoi Nguyen) at Design Matters in Los Angeles, Quam Odunsi uses vintage cameras and equipment to create […]

Studio Visit / Preview: Brett Amory – “Waiting 101” @ Lazarides (Newcastle)

A few Sundays ago, AM decided to swing by Brett Amory’s Oakland studio while he was preparing for his upcoming Lazarides solo entitled Waiting 101 at the Newcastle location. This show marks an evolution in his creative process, as he now carries his iPhone everywhere he goes and is able to immediately capture a moment whenever he feels inspired (whereas before, it would take months to compile images to use for his work). One thing we noticed was that all of the work for the […]

Album Covers: James Jean x Talib Kweli – “Prisoner of Conscious”

As with many other artists followed by AM in the past, it looks like James Jean (featured) has been tapped to provided the cover art for Talib Kweli’s new album Prisoner of Conscious. Featuring the LA-based artist’s intricate stylings as a mask, the American rapper has chosen the title from his constant labeling as a “conscious rapper” and as a play off Nigerian reggae artist Majek Fashek’s album named Prisoner of Conscience. For those looking for more from Jean, look for his work in an upcoming group […]
