Studio Visits / Preview: Augustine Kofie – “Circulatory System” @ White Walls

This Saturday, Augustine Kofie will be opening a solo exhibition, Circulatory System, at White Walls Gallery in San Francisco. The title is a play on words describing a new body of work that focuses on circular shapes in an interconnected system, much like an engine or a network of intersecting highways. Like many of his solo shows, Kofie has produced a soundtrack to accompany the exhibition of over 30 new brand new works including a large installation. More than a traditional DJ mix, this sound-assemblage […]

Openings: Simen Johan @ Yossi Milo

Opening last Thursday at Yossi Milo was the latest show by talented NY-based Scandinavian photographer, Simen Johan. Johan has developed a unique method in which he photographs animals and plants in nature preserves and then uses sculptural and digital techniques to seamlessly incorporate them into environments of his creation. This exhibition continues with his series entitled Until the Kingdom Comes, which was shown at the gallery in 2010, as well as in the Frist Center for Visual Arts in Nashville, the 21c Museum in Louisville […]

Openings: Marilyn Minter @ Salon 94

A couple weeks ago, AM stopped by Salon 94 to take in Marilyn Minter’s new body of work. The exhibition, her third at the New York gallery and two years in the making, continues to see a refinement her technique of putting a glass plate between the camera and her subject when she shoots. The centerpiece of the show is Mercury, a huge blowup of a baby splashing through silver paint which is further explored in a new video, Play Pen, shown on the first […]

On a busy art weekend in Los Angeles, another show to visit on Saturday night, November 12th, is Thomas Doyle’s solo at LeBasse Projects. The NY-based artist will be filling the Culver City showspace with a continuation of his Distillation series, an uncanny intersection of destruction and domestic life in the form of his model-like sculptural work. Surface to Air will also feature the debut of Doyle’s new Foregone series, consisting of photographic portraits of the child figures that feature prominently in his three-dimensional work. […]

Last Thursday, Walton Ford opened his latest exhibition at Paul Kasmin, entitled I Don’t Like to Look at Him, Jack. It Makes Me Think of that Awful Day on the Island. Taking its name from the 1933 film King Kong, the show includes three Kong-sized works on paper, capturing the beast in several facial expressions. In addition, Ford displays a series of paintings that are more representative of his modern-naturalist style. Based off a quote from John Audobon’s memoirs in which he recounted a childhood […]

Video: “Skin” Trailer

A while back, we told you about the debut issue of  Dasha Zhukova’s provocative new art magazine Garage which featured tattoos from prominent artists like Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Raymond Pettibon, John Baldessari, and Damien Hirst. The Hirst designed butterfly in particular was controversial because it was tattooed onto the labia (NSFW pics here) of a willing participant. Now, comes word of a documentary entitled Skin that was produced in association with the project.  Check the trailer above. Via booooooom.

Openings: Tom Sachs – “WORKS” @ Sperone Westwater

Included in the exhibition was this reproduction of the award-winning gallery (seen above), rendered in meticulous detail. More openings photos after the jump…
