Armory Week can get a little overwhelming with the number of formal fairs which one can attend. By the end of the week, we needed to blow off some steam. AM recently visited the studio of friend Shepard Fairey (featured) to preview his works for the coming show at Robert Berman Gallery in Los Angeles. One of the booths we really enjoyed at this year’s Pulse fair was that of Christina Ray, who presented a solo exhibition by artist Beka Goedde. Goedde’s work is very much based in printmaking, using such techniques as etching and Chine-collé (the application of thin colored paper as color) to create unique mixed media pieces that sometimes resemble simple collage and other times look more like complex abstract paintings. Armory Week’s merry go round of satellite fairs would not be complete without the inclusion of Scope. Held at a large warehouse facility on the west wide of the island, the location reflected the grass root and creative vibe that gave us numerous sound related installations and a really gaudy ode to decadence. Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who recently orchestrated the New Year’s fireworks for Taipei, recently turned his attention to a different part of the world. His exhibition Resplandor y Soledad or Splendor and Solitude is currently showing at the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City (runs through March 20th), his first solo in Latin America. After enjoying the change and chaos of the inaugural Independent fair last year (covered), we made sure to return this year when making our Armory week rounds. And we were glad we did. Although the Independent can feel somewhat chaotic because of its lack of walls to designate individual booths, the art presented tends to be much edgier and less commercial than that shown at many of the other fairs. Jonathan Darby’s solo show Favela opens soon at the Signal Gallery, and this video teaser shows a little what to expect without giving the game away. Darby has linked up with CARF (Children at Risk Foundation) who work with street kids in Sao Paulo for the exhibition, and some of the proceeds from the show will go to the charity. David Shillinglaw’s Hobo Chic, opened last Thursday at Negre Gallery in the Columbia Road area of London, and AM went along to take a look. Shillinglaw’s work involves a multitude of surfaces, mediums and media.
