Showing: Richard Colman – “Something Better” @ Guerrero Gallery

This past weekend, Richard Colman (interviewed) opened his solo show “Something Better” at the Guerrero Gallery. Fans of the Bay Area artist were delighted to see not one, but two immersive installation pieces filling the spacious showroom. As you can see from part of the installation above, Richard has started exploring pieces with different geometrical patterns in with a more metallic palette. You will see that many of the standalone pieces featured this new direction in the photos after the jump…

Last Saturday, Kofie’One / Augustine Kofie (featured) introduced his first solo show to the Bay Area with “Retrofitted and Other Forms of Vintage Futurism” at White Walls in SF. According to Art Review’s annual Power 100 list, Larry Gagosian, the world’s most powerful art dealer, is the art world’s most powerful figure in 2010. Perhaps a sign of the reawakening of the art market, Iwan Wirth and David Zwirner occupy the three and four spots, giving gallerists three of the top four spots, while Serpentine’s co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist drops to #2. AM was living large at the exclusive release party for “Stickers: Stuck-Up Piece of Crap,” an amazing book just published by Rizzoli chronicling stickers in contemporary music, design and art. The passion-project of DB Burkeman – drum and bass DJ and jack-of-all-trades, “Stickers” contains images of approximately 4,000 pieces from Barry McGee, Kaws, ESPO, Neckface, Shepard Fairey and many many more. Last week, the Brooklyn Museum opened a mid-career survey of the work of Brooklyn-based artist Fred Tomaselli. Tomaselli—who grew up in Southern California, but has been working in Williamsburg since the ’80s—is known for his exciting mixed-media paintings, created by collaging figures and patterns from images of plants, birds and body parts clipped from nature field guides and magazines. The “Pop Surrealism“ museum show AM recently previewed is now showing at the Carandente Museum in Spoleto, Italy. Put together by Rome’s Dorothy Circus Gallery, with assistance from New York’s Jonathan Levine Gallery, the exhibition brings together 45 artists from the new contemporary scene, including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Tara MacPherson, Jeff Soto, Travis Louie and a wonderful piece from Joe Sorren. One of the most exciting shows we’ve recalled writing about that takes place in New Hampshire is coming up. SugiPOP! is co-curated by Beau Basse of LeBasse Projects and will take up residence at the Portsmouth Museum of Art.
