Streets of Boston: Shepard Fairey Bombs Bean Town

Shepard Fairey must be a Cylon… With temperatures in Boston as low as 8 degrees, there is no way he’s spent the last week hitting the streets of Boston. It’s amazing that Shepard and his crew are willing to brave Arctic-like temperature just to work the historic walls of Bean Town and make the city his personal urban canvas. As the city anticipates the historic retrospective at the ICA Boston next week (teased), Shepard is making his presence felt without relying on “Obama” imagery. Simply […]

Openings: Mark Dean Veca @ UAG – UCSD

Mark Dean Veca, who we just interviewed a couple days ago, opened up his show last night at the UAG gallery.  We had only seen the nice in-progress setup previously, but the finished installation looks even more amazing.  The show runs till March 15th, so stop by for a look if you have a chance.  As mentioned before, he will also doing an “artist talk” on February 26th if you are interested in attending.  We gathered some images for you to peruse after the jump.

Preview: Worlds on Fire “Grammy” Show

Art and music have always been intertwined.  Whether it be Jay-Z including one of Murakami’s paintings in his music video “Blue Magic,” KAWS collaborating on an album cover with Kayne West, Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden collecting Luke Chueh paintings, or Dave Cooper creating a music video for Danko Jones, the examples seem endless. One of these intersects will open next week with the “World on Fire” show at the Pacific Electric Lofts in LA where many well-known artists in the Low Brow and/or Contemporary Art […]

Preview/Setup: Shepard Fairey Retrospective @ ICA Boston

First, we showed you what the streets of Boston are starting to look like as Shepard Fairey’s retrospective at the ICA draws near (here). AM now brings you a glimpse of what’s going on inside the ICA as everyone is hustling to get things set up for the exhibition opening next week.  There seems to be a buzz flying around the show as the registrars busy are sorting through the intricate stencils and as the install crew unwrap the crates of ginormous works.  Even Shepard is […]

Preview/Interviews: Mark Dean Veca @ UAG – UCSD

One of the exhibitions we have been looking forward to this month is Mark Dean Veca’s “Paintings, Wall Drawings, and Collaborations” (teased) at the University Art Gallery at UC San Diego opening tomorrow, Jan 29th, 6 – 8:30 pm. His psychadelic and organic style is unique and has often been described as a mixture of pop culture imagery and 18th Century French “Toile de Jouy” style patterns. As relatively new fans of his, we were particularly interested in learning more about his work as this […]

Google Icon x Jackson Pollock

Google is celebrating influential American abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock’s birthday today with their ever changing icon at the top of their search page. We wonder what percentage of people who use google everyday actually recognized the reference. If you haven’t watched the 2006 documentary “Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?“ we recommend it as it has become somewhat of a cult classic for the art world. The video centers around a truck driver named Teri Horton who may have purchased a Pollock painting worth […]

Teaser: Takashi Murakami @ Gagosian Gallery – UK

Fresh off a successful retrospective at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Germany (here), Takashi Murakami is getting ready for his 4th and final stop of his historic retrospective tour at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain on Februrary 17th. But before then, the reknowned Gagosian Gallery in the UK will be serving up a show of new works by the master of Superflat to run in tandem with the show in Bilbao (Feb 10th – April 9th.). Here’s a little teaser of Murakami’s famous […]

Openings: ART LA 2009

AM swung by ART LA 2009 (previewed) this past weekend to scope out the latest in contemporary art being exhibited by the 60 emerging and blue-chip galleries on hand. Tim Fleming, Director of ART LA, describes the fair best, “ART LA, the New Los Angeles International Contemporary Art Fair, is an internationally acclaimed art-world event that has become one of the most significant annual cultural events in greater Los Angeles. ART LA has developed into a local community platform for Los Angeles based galleries to […]

Openings: 15 Years of New Image Art

Last night’s opening for “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed here and here) reaffirmed why New Image Art is one of the primary driving forces in the alternative/low-brow/street art scene. The show was everything we thought it would be and more – great art, an energetic crowd, and non-stop entertainment. AM congratulates Marsea Goldberg and the entire New Image Art team on an amazing fifteen years! See all the artwork and photos from the opening after the jump.

Openings: Dalek @ Redux Contemporary

Wish we could have attended the event ourselves, but luckily one of our readers sent us some opening pics from Dalek’s (interviewed) show at the Redux Contemporary that opened last night. Take a look at the whole set after the jump, and check out Dalek’s blog as well for additional photos.
