Releases: Gary Baseman – “Midnight Magi” Figure

Today, Gary Baseman (interviewed) is set to release his first figure “Midnight Magi” with toy maker Kidrobot. This heralds the launch of Kidrobot Black, an ultra-exclusive line that features only one colorway – black, with the molds being broken after production. The cool figure is limited to only 200 pieces and will only be released on a special Kidrobot site: http://www.black.kidrobot.com. So, keep your eyes peeled for the special site to go live. Openings: “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” Show @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles opened their “Under the Influence – He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” exhibition (previewed) last weekend.  Not only were their a plethora of themed works on display, it seems the gallery went full out with a Castle Greyskull installation. Releases: Audrey Kawasaki – “Yuuwaku” & “Hyakki Yakou” Time-Limited Prints

So, it turns out the poll that Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) ran to choose her next print was a tie between “Yuuwaku” & “Hyakki Yakou,” so she decided to make both available (you have to choose one) to her fans.  Both will be on sale on January 23rd, Saturday, between 3pm to 4pm Pacific Time for a hour window.  Since the release is “time-limited,” anyone who buys during that time period is guaranteed a print meaning the edition size will be announced after the sales are […]

Sketchbook: Stella Im Hultberg

We had only recently started our new sketchbook feature which takes our readers back to what is often times the very beginning of an artist’s creative process. Conveniently for us, Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) posted up some images of her sketches on her blog for all to enjoy.  Take a look there or after the jump at the ballpoint pen & brush pen produced gestural doodles.

Preview: Mark Dean Veca – “Cherry Pie” @ Western Projects

After an impressive showing at Jonathan LeVine in September, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) starts off 2010 with a group show. “Cherry Pie” opens on January 16th at Western Project in their new location with Justin Bower, Sush Machida Gaikotsu, Patrick Lee, Russ Meyer, and Liz Young along with MDV adding to his pop iconography library with his rendition of Mr. Monopoly. Preview: Brian Viveros & Dan Quintana – “Desensitized” @ Copro Gallery

Brian Viveros and Dan Quintana are set to open a dual show tonight entitled “Desensitized” with collaborative (like the painting above) and individual works. In what seems to be a perfect match in styles, both artists will be bringing their cigarette-smoking, gun-slinging, bad-ass women to Copro Gallery for all to worship and enjoy. Preview: Krista Huot – “Nepenthe” @ Gallery 1988 (SF)

This Saturday night, January 9th, Krista Huot (interviewed) returns to Gallery 1988 in San Francisco with a new body of work. The solo show, entitled “Nepenthe” or translated as “drug of forgetfulness” mentioned in ancient Greek mythology appears to be loosely based on various fairytales such as Snow White, Alice In Wonderland, Rapunzel, Cinderella among others. Krista is also planning on painting the walls of the gallery to look like a storybook forest so we are looking forward to seeing how it all turns out. […]
