Baby Tattooville ’14: Secret Store

Every edition of Baby Tattooville includes a “Secret Store” where attendees (in order of their seniority at the event) are allowed to purchase art merchandise and even original works form the participating artists. The highlight of this year’s setup were paintings that were used for this year’s print set including an stunning piece from Joe Sorren (seen above). Take a look below at more shots of what was available… See full coverage of this year’s event here. Discuss Baby Tattooville here.

Baby Tattoville ’14: “Through The Looking Glass” @ Riverside Art Museum

Every year the city of Riverside, California plays host to Baby Tattooville, it is one of the highlights for the town and an unmistakable part of the personality of the event. The separation from Los Angeles and its art scene is part of what make the event so unique. The attendees are taken out of their environment and plunged into a Baby Tattoo world, populated by lowbrow artists, their creations and the people who love them. Each year, the Riverside Art Museum puts on an […]

Showing: “Abstract” @ BC Gallery

Berlin’s BC Gallery is opening a new season with an interesting group exhibition simply titled Abstract that opened September 26th. Featuring works by nine international artists, this show puts a focus on non-figurative artworks along with its possibilities and advantages. Experimenting with geometrical forms, materials, mediums and colors, often juxtaposing black and white, featured artists show their take on abstraction. While some artists such as Moneyless or Nelio use strict geometrical shapes, others break these patterns into new, unfamiliar ones. The creation and use of such unusual shapes […]

Previews: Usugrow – “Inkflow” @ Fifty24SF

Tomorrow night (October 4th) in San Francisco, Inkflow will mark the return of Usugrow to Fifty24SF after showing there in 2007 and participating in a group show with his Shinganist crew back in 2009 (covered). Along with presenting his Bay Area fans with his distinctive original work filled with ornate calligraphy and his recognizable skull motif, the Japanese artist will also be releasing a new book titled USUGROW: Works 2007-2013 in association with Upper Playground. Discuss Usugrow here.

Baby Tatooville ’14: Things Start to Get Intimate at the Artist Panel

Perhaps the most notable thing about Baby Tattooville is how personal it is. Unlike any other event on earth, attendees are invited to spend time with the artists, watch them create and in general everyone gets to know each other. What better way to get things going then to have the event organizer Bob Self introduce each artist, have them each say a little about themselves, their experiences with the event and what they plan on doing for this year’s event. Official participants this year include Brom, Laurie Lee Brom, […]

Baby Tattooville ’14: The Madness Begins!

The guests and artists are shuffling into the beautiful Mission Inn Resort as Baby Tattooville 2014 starts! All attendees are treated to their names being handwritten by a calligraphy artist for their name badges (actually limited edition prints from Joe Sorren), as well as receiving their official welcome kit. Below are pictures of some of the guests, as well as some of the artists like Brom, Laurie Lee Brom, Brandi Milne and Jeff Soto checking in for the event. The art retreat runs all weekend […]

Scott Scheidly – “The Pinks 2” @ Spoke Art

Continuing his signature series of works that we last saw in 2013 (covered), Scott Scheidly will be returning to San Francisco for a show opening tomorrow night, October 4th. Held at the sister gallery (Hashimoto Contemporary) to where he exhibited last, The Pinks 2 will see the Florida-based artist explore the cultural and social perceptions of color and symbology by painting well known characters in pop culture and history that are typically masculine with a more flamboyant aesthetic. Head over for a look at these unconventional and satirical portraits […]

Previews: Faith47 – “Aqua Regalia” @ Moniker Projects

This year’s Moniker Art Fair will include a solo entitled Aqua Regalia by Faith47, set to open on the 9th of October. Using different mediums, including graphite, spray paint, oil paint, ink, photography and collage, she usually paints on found objects or discarded documents, transferring the feel of her mural works. The transparency of her mark making and the texture of finished works give them a sense of age and spirituality. Often mixing religious iconography with ordinary, everyday elements and geometrical objects, her paintings, drawings and sketches seem to have […]

Baby Tattooville ’14 / Interviews: Laurie Lee Brom

Washington State based artist Laurie Lee Brom is best known for her pixie women set in fantastic worlds. She is a fixture in the art world regularly showing at galleries like Roq La Rue in Seattle and Gallery Nocturna in Belgium. AM recently got the chance to talk with her while she was preparing for this year’s Baby Tattooville about the women in her paintings, raising kids with Brom and how the movie Bad Seed has managed to creep into one of her newer works. Arrested Motion (AM): I would love to find […]

Showing: Kehinde Wiley – “The World Stage: Haiti” @ Roberts & Tilton

Continuing his long relationship with the Culver City gallery, Kehinde Wiley is currently showing at Roberts & Tilton, his fifth solo there. Entitled The World Stage: Haiti, the new work follows the same successful formula from previous exhibitions while sourcing from a new locale. Carrying on his series of paintings of disadvantaged youth from different international locales (Jamaica, Israel, France, India, Brazil, Lagos, Dakar, China, and Sri Lanka) posed as if in classical paintings, the new work draw attention to the people of Haiti and its history. Created with Wiley’s signature aesthetic, ideas […]
