Showing: “Timeline” @ Underdogs Gallery

The year is coming to a close and as with any year’s passing we tend to stop and reflect. In doing so, we can certainly say this was the year of the Underdogs. And by Underdogs, we mean a band of art activists turning Lisbon upside down with one large scale mural project after another, rivaling cities five times its population. The year ending show at the Underdogs Gallery appropriately titled TIMELINE takes pause to celebrate not only the year’s incredible accomplishments, but the the marking of […]

Openings: Chris Berens – “Nensha” @ Megumi Ogita

Dutch painter Chris Berens recently opened his long awaited first ever solo show in Japan at the Megumi Ogita Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo. Nensha was artist’s only show for 2013 and he created a completely new body of for it, which was strongly inspired by Japanese culture, tradition and life style. The entire process began with a visit Japan earlier this year, painting on the new pieces through the year, and finally opening a show on the 7th of December, which was captured by the film crew […]

Projects: Augustine Kofie @ The Z (Detroit)

Back in October, we shared with you a project that the Library Street Collective in Detroit had arranged at a downtown mixed-use development (referred to as “The Z”). A series of murals had been painted already in the ongoing venture at that time and now we have updates for you on some of the newer walls. This particular piece we are focusing on here was created by Augustine Kofie (featured) as you can see from the architectural influenced abstract imagery. Photo credit: Theonepointeight. Basel Week Miami ’13: Faile & Bast – “Deluxx Fluxx”

During Art Basel Week, numerous artists trek to Miami to set up artistic pop-up projects. One of our favorites this year was by the Brooklyn-based Faile and Bast. They brought their nostalgic arcade-based exhibition entitled Deluxx Fluxx to entertain both the eyes and souls of patrons that stopped by their fresh throwback arcade. As previewed in our studio visit, this collaborative project with Perrier is now in it’s third iteration (version 1.0 in London & 2.0 in NYC) and it continued to push the envelope. It wasn’t […]

Streets: Risk, Meggs, Insa, Uglar, Echo – Abandoned Water Park Project

One of our contributing photographers in the past, Birdman, recently arranged for some artists to paint in an abandoned water park located somewhere in the Mojave Desert between California and Las Vegas. The project in association with VNA saw Risk, Meggs, Insa (along with some suicide girls decked out in Insa gear), Uglar, and Echo made their mark in and around the structures that exuded the aura of a failed American Dream. More photos from the can be seen in Issue 24 of Very Nearly Almost Magazine with some […]

Opening: Curiot & Nosego – “Unknown Elements” @ Thinkspace gallery

Mexican-based artist Curiot, and his Philly-based colleague, Nosego, opened their two man show entitled Unknown Elements on 14th of December at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City, California. Finding and teaming up two artists that don’t have a history of working together can be a big challenge for the gallery and curators, but collaboration was inevitable in this case. They proved that by putting up shows that blended two bodies of work into one, not only by painting a mural inside the gallery space, but also by […]

Signings: Mark Ryden @ Taschen Store (Hollywood)

What better way to ring in the holidays than with one of your favorite artists – Mark Ryden. Like his signing in New York from earlier this year, the low brow luminary will be autographing two of his recent monographs at the Taschen store in Los Angeles (Farmer’s Market location, December 23rd, 7-9pm, RSVP: [email protected]) . The newer of the two, The Gay 90s, published by Rizzoli, illustrates the works included Ryden’s 2010 exhibition The Gay 90s: Old Thyme Art Show at Paul Kasmin Gallery (covered) while Pinxit by Taschen is a more comprehensive overview of […]

As part of our survey of this year’s Art Basel Week in Miami, we already brought you some highlights from the PULSE art fair. It’s now time to focus in on some of the booths that caught our eye.
