Streets: El Mac Mural in Chelsea

When El Mac was in town for his show “The Humble and Sublime” at Joshua Liner Gallery last week, he also laid down some work in the streets of New York. He labored through both rain and shine to create this little gem on the corner of 10th Ave & 26th St. in Chelsea. We like the radiant glow that this piece exudes. Preview: “Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time” @ Whitney Museum

The Whitney Museum will be holding an exhibition to feature Edward Hopper and many of his contemporary peers from 1900-1940. Focusing on this period of time when massive changes were occurring in America, artists such as Ed captured the sweeping transformation across the nation in both rural and urban areas. In case you’re wondering who else is a fan, maybe you’ll remember Banksy taking a page out of Hopper’s famous “Night Hawks” (here). This show opens October 28th. Check out a preview after the jump.

Opening next month, “Myth of the American Motorcycle” at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati (previously the site of the Shepard Fairey retrospective) will feature the vibrant paintings of Rosson Crow (featured). The exhibition, fueled by Rosson’s love for motorcycle lore, combines her expansive-retro style with the thematic choice of an American icon – a perfect match. Frieze 2010: Marcel Dzama

To continue our focus on some of the most enjoyable elements of the Frieze Art Fair, we were drawn in to a room within David Zwirner’s booth dedicated to an installation of works by Marcel Dzama. A full sized hooded mannequin, complete with rifle, pirouetted in the centre of the room and drew voyeurs into a world of wonder from Dzama. Geometrically inclined Aakash Nihalani will be opening a new show at the Bose Pacia Gallery in New York on November 4th. After taking the next step in converting his public tape installations to cut aluminum gallery pieces for an LA show earlier this year, we are looking forward to what the creative street artist will bring next. As we mentioned in out teaser last week, Dorothy Circus will be hosting a new body of work from Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) on October 29th. The show entitled “Incubi Celesti” or “Heavenly Nightmares” is a fitting name for these new paintings. Although there is always something delicate and beautiful about Nicoletta’s work, each of these new pieces has some darker aspects to them when you look closer.
