Streets: Sam3 (Madrid)

After visiting the Fame Festival, we came away with a even greater respect for Sam3’s deceptively simple shadow work, especially after seeing a pretty awesome piece in the gallery show. It looks like the Spanish artist has been busy as he also recently completed a complex set of three murals in Madrid. Take a closer look at the triptych after the jump…

Showing: Dan McCarthy – “The World We Live In” @ Gallery 1988 (SF)

Currently showing at Gallery 1988 in SF through the end of this month is a fantastic new body of work from Dan McCarthy (interviewed). The Massachusetts artist’s paintings are definitely informed by his surroundings as he continues to develop imagery of forests, nature, seasons, light, and the general smallness of man in this world. The show entitled “The World We Live In” features mostly originals, ink drawings, screenprints, and a sweet series of screenprints finished with watercolor to capture a scene gradually as the setting […]

Teaser: Greg “Craola” Simkins – “Story Teller” @ Gallery 1988

With a successful NYC show over the summer (covered), Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) will keep the ball rolling by returning to his home turf in LA for a solo at Gallery 1988. On November 5th, Story Teller will highlight a new body of street inspired, pop surrealist work with the gallery responsible for bringing Craola out of the obscurity of graffiti circles and into the warm embraces of the contemporary art world. The fairy tale narrative within Greg’s work, however unlike the stories remembered from […]

Preview: Nathan Ota x Risk @ Hurley Space

Take a look at the date of the photo above. It was taken almost 25 years ago of Nathan Ota (who recently opened his solo in LA) and RISK (of MSK fame). And yes, surprisingly like many of the fine artists we follow, Nathan had a background in graffiti. After losing touch for a long time, the duo have reunited for a collaboration mural at the Hurley Space in Orange County. Stop by to take a look for yourself on Saturday, October 16th (6-10pm) and […]

Artwork Donated by Banksy Sells for $75,000 @ Christie’s

The artwork pictured above recently sold at Christie’s Post-War & Contemporary Art Day Auction for $75,000. The 2010 spray enamel on found aluminium sign piece measures 36″ x 36″ and was donated by Banksy to help benefit the restoration fund for “Defenestration” in San Francisco. Kudos to the elusive artist for helping out a worthy cause. For those die-hard Banksy collectors that are curious, yes, the work has been authenticated by Pest Control Office. Art Review 2010 Power 100 List

According to Art Review’s annual Power 100 list, Larry Gagosian, the world’s most powerful art dealer, is the art world’s most powerful figure in 2010.  Perhaps a sign of the reawakening of the art market, Iwan Wirth and David Zwirner occupy the three and four spots, giving gallerists three of the top four spots, while Serpentine’s co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist drops to #2.  Notable in this list is the reflection of the rise of performance art in 2010.  Performa founder RoseLee Goldberg makes it all […]

Openings: Fred Tomaselli @ The Brooklyn Museum

Last week, the Brooklyn Museum opened a mid-career survey of the work of Brooklyn-based artist Fred Tomaselli. Tomaselli—who grew up in Southern California, but has been working in Williamsburg since the ’80s—is known for his exciting mixed-media paintings, created by collaging figures and patterns from images of plants, birds and body parts clipped from nature field guides and magazines. Tomaselli also incorporates actual pharmaceutical pills into his works, before covering them in clear resin and then painting over top. The result is totally unique, combining […]

Teaser: Invader – “Roma 2010 & Other Curiosities” @ Wunderkammern (Italy)

French street art phenom Invader has trained his sights on his next target, quietly mobilizing a army of alien assassins poised to attack neighboring Italy with his first solo in over a year. Opening October 23rd at Wunderkammern, Roma 2010 & Other Curiosities will in part continue the artist’s self-ascribed “RubikCubism”, an inventive re-purposing of the definitive hand-held puzzle toy that first manifested itself during his tribute to classic album cover art in NYC (covered) and saw further rearrangements with last years UK solo (covered).
