Openings: Aiko & Junko Mizuno @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Opening alongside Samuel Lowder’s show (covered) several weeks ago was the work of Aiko and Junko Mizuno. The feminine-styled stencil work of Aiko, from our point of view, was the bridge between the two artists in this joint show forming a cohesiveness between the bodies of work. Mizuno provided her signature cute yet violent imagery dubbed “Gothic Kawaii” or “Kawaii Noir” in a series of paintings and drawings. More pics after the jump…

Openings: Eric Joyner – “Donut Logic” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Last Saturday, robots invaded Culver City at the Corey Helford Gallery in the form of paintings from Eric Joyner, bringing along with them their food of choice – donuts! As Eric states in an interview with AM last week, his initial inspiration was his collection of tin robots and watching the movie Pleasantville, where Jeff Daniels paints a still-life of donuts. This time, he adds another food group to the mix to “Donut Logic” – cupcakes! More opening pics after the jump…

Looks like Jeff Koons will be visiting France again. Back again 2 years after his exhibition in Versailles, Jeff Koons is set to open his latest show of his famed Popeye series at France’s Galarie Jerome De Noirmont. The opening will occur September 16th and coincidentally will be the same weekend his peer Takashi Murakami opens his solo at Versailles. Via Happy Famous Artists. Discuss Jeff Koons here.

Openings: Titi Freak – “Sempre” @ Galerie Choque Cultural

Recently, one of Sao Paulo’s most important voices, Titi Freak, opened his newest show “Sempre” at Choque Cultural. Born Hamilton Yakota, and also a champion yo-yoer, the street artist fuses imagery from his Japanese heritage and South American roots into a kinetic mix of color and brushstrokes. Renowned Los Angeles based writer SABER (interviewed) recently posted up an image of him on his blog working after hours on presumably a new mural. Of course, you will recognizable his distinct lettering style, but is that a face peeking out above? Representing San Francisco, the amazing David Choong Lee recently hauled down over 400 of his favorite works to LeBasee Projects in Culver City. The prolifically staged exhibition is as complete a representation of the artist’s skills as one imagines you can get. Lee takes over the entire gallery himself and the solo show features installations of panels, some from found materials, such as wooden wine crates, and has an architectural feel, as they rest on tables and balance on pillars. On Saturday night, AM attended the opening for Joshua Liner Gallery’s annual “Summer Show”. Apparently, so did many of the art loving New Yorkers that turned out to pack the house. Studio Visits: Marcus Freeman

AM came across Marcus Freeman’s paintings last year, and we instantly loved how he mixes a superflat representational style of depicting the built environment with the cleanliness of Ed Ruscha & Patrick Caulfield’s pop art stylings. It seems that cans of paint are a valuable commodity in Ecuador and whilst we discard our empty cans and messed up caps without question where it is readily available, the local kids in Quito clean up the old tips and re-fill and re-pressurise the cans for a second life. Looks like German artistic duo Herakut are scheduled for an exhibition this September at LeBasse Projects. Entitled “Hope’s Reply”, the show from Hera (interviewed) and Akut, will hopefully feature some of those fantastic sculptural pieces (like at Springmann.Varol) along with their paintings as well as some outdoor work as part of their visit to Los Angeles.
