Openings: Richard Hambleton – “A Retrospective” @ Valmorbida x Phillips de Pury

AM recently caught the opening of Richard Hambleton’s A Retrospective at Phillips de Pury’s Park Avenue gallery space. The two floor location showcased a survey of Richard’s long history of working in both street and fine art with pieces dating back to 1982 on display including his classic shadow silhouettes to his more recent contemporary landscapes that he names “beautiful paintings.” Of course, much like the last opening hosted by Valmorbida, the fashion week event drew a mix of New York’s elite to catch this […]

Retna x Chanel Store (Beverly Hills)

Retna (featured), who recently was in Miami setting off Wynwood Walls for this year, was spotted back in Los Angeles painting in the Chanel store where he spent some time doing working on some black on black adornment of one of the walls in the Beverly Hills boutique with his signature calligraphy. For fans eager for more action from the MSK AWR crew member, he will also be featured in Vanity Fair next month with photography by David Lachapelle. More shots after the jump including […]

Streets: Blu (Spain) Part II

After a machine-like summer which saw Blu continue banging out thought provoking murals in the Eurozone in a near never ending stream of projects that started back in March (see Italy, Bologna, Palestra, Jesi, Krakow, Poznań, Fabriano, Cologne, Grottaglie, Valencia, Italy), the Italian street maestro has apparently worked his wizardry on another massive wall in Valencia, Spain. The coastal Mediterranean community had served as ground zero for a nice tandem collaborative effort with Escif back in July for the Arquitecturas Colectivas street art event. This time Blu […]

Os Gemeos for Kauno Bienalé (Lithuania)

Globetrotting street duo, Os Gemeos, recently landed in Lithuania to take part in the Kauno Bienalé. After experimenting with some new techniques involving inflatable balloons in their home country last month, they return to their mastery of mural making with this new whimsical nautical wall. Sharing the space in collaboration with Margarida Kančiukaitis Pandolfo and Veronica Kančiukaitis Tognoli, the twins also painted and re-purposed a structure, leaving the interior for the other the other artists to work on. A more detailed look after the jump…

Art Focus: Robert Montgomery

Robert Montgomery is the associate publisher of Dazed & Confused, but our art focus on him today is because of his practice of the Situationist tradition of detournement, which he interprets by replacing advertisements, often times illicitly, with his own poetry. Sounds like on the surface, a more intellectual form of street art doesn’t it? Besides this particular method of expression (which you can see examples of after the jump), he is also known for creating a series “recycled sunlight” pieces that combines solar cells […]

Openings: Cope2 – “Last Legend” @ Bob’s Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Bronx graffiti writer COPE2’s show at bOb Gallery. Entitled Last Legend, the hometown legend showcased a body of work with a different style as we have seen recently from his tour of duty in Los Angeles and Copenhagen. The show runs until September 30th, so stop by the LES to catch it. Check out the full set by Joe Russo  after the jump.

Streets: LUDO (London)

While in town for his recent London show, LUDO (interviewed) spent some time outside of the gallery in the urban environment where he feels most comfortable. His large-scale, hand-drawn wheatpastes infiltrated walls, billboards, and shutterfronts citywide. As with his recent stateside street tour, the green-tinged pieces seem to blend seamlessly into the already derelict city landscape, as if providing a snapshot of the future evolution of these plants and insects as they mutate and arm themselves to fight back against the species that has senselessly […]

Openings: “Reality Bites” @ Post No Bills

Last week, Post No Bills held their third exhibition thus far entitled Reality Bites. The show centered around the work of various artists including Borf, Brett Amory, Sage Vaughn, Kelsey Brookes, Mark Jenkins, Morley, and Ravi Zupa who supplied new limited edition prints as well as hand finished multiples. Among some of the night’s highlights, Shark (seen previously here) by Brookes was one which clearly got the attention of the visitors. Featuring the use of neon-colored lines and an array of colors, the piece was […]

Streets: Vhils (UK)

Vhils, whom we recently filmed working on a wall for the Post No Bills gallery in Venice, California has been spotted chiseling away on the other side of the pond in the UK. This newest piece was commissioned by the Urban Outfitters in Exeter and also features what looks to be a specially constructed facade to accommodate the Portuguese artist’s unique techniques. More photos after the jump…
