Openings: Anthony Lister @ HVW8

Last Friday evening, HVW8 gallery unveiled new works by Australian-born artist Anthony Lister (interviewed). For this project, Junk Food Art House teamed up with the artist in bringing the theme of the lost superhero to the forefront. The exhibit put a cap to the three-week long venture which had Lister’s posters placed all across the city of Los Angeles. This most recent work continues to explore the artist’s fascination with the superhero as a way to discuss themes of postmodernism and the loss of identity. […]

This past Thursday, Post No Bills gallery held their second gallery exhibit which featured works by the likes of Anthony Micallef, Conor Harrington, Ian Francis, Jonathan Yeo, JR, Mode 2, Paul Insect, Stanley Donwood, Vhils and Zevs. Titled as the European Bailout Show, this exhibition focused entirely on some of Europe’s most interesting artists working today. It’s well established that will.i.am is a patron of the arts as evidenced by his involvement with the Grammy art shows (2009 and 2010) and music video featuring the work of Shepard Fairey. Streets: West Hollywood Library Wrapup (Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, RETNA)

Although the new public library in West Hollywood isn’t set to open until the fall, the three large murals by Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf, and RETNA are now complete. Billed as an extension to MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, the project (which we have been following) was apparently conceived by Jeffrey Deitch himself and will also include some additional indoor work from Fairey. After gifting his native country of Ireland with three cowboy-themed murals (here, here and here), Conor Harrington (interviewed) has returned to England to continue working on his next solo show. He did find time however to paint this wall in London going back to his signature colonial style. Nick Walker (interviewed) went on a little trip over to France recently and our correspondent Butterfly tagged along with the Bristol artist as he wandered the streets of Paris to do a little scenic adjustment. Continuing to tear through Europe (Bologna, Palestra, Jesi, Krakow, Poznań, Fabriano, Cologne, Grottaglie, Valencia, Italy) at a torrid pace since March, Blu has hit up his home country again at the Draw The Line Festival in Campobasso, Italy. This new wall caused some initial controversy, of which the Italian street artist is not unfamiliar with after the MOCA incident, and features his views on war and a biting rendition of how the military produces their soldiers. After showing off one of his brightest stars, Brooklyn-based Faile (featured), at his new outpost in Los Angeles, Lazarides will be introducing some of his other artists including Antony Micallef, Conor Harrington, Ian Francis, Jonathan Yeo, JR, Mode 2, Paul Insect, Stanley Donwood, Zevs, and Vhils (who just christens the outdoor space with a new piece).
