Michael De Feo will be presenting a new series of painting and prints in Coming In From The Outside, featuring a series of his iconic flowers which have graced so many city walls – in particular around his New York base – plus a series of hand finished prints based upon his figurative / portraiture based drawings. Auctions – “Under the Influence” @ Phillips de Pury & Co. New York

This Tuesday, Phillips de Pury & Company will be holding their more-accessible Under the Influence contemporary auction in New York. Among the lots are pieces by many of our favorite artists, including Chiho Aoshima, Marcel Dzama, Phil Frost, and Barry McGee. One notable lot is Portrait 5, Stephen(s), 2009–2010, a collaborative work by Shepard Fairey, Andres Serrano and Frank Stella, which debuted on the December 8, 2010 episode of The Colbert Report as part of an interview with Steve Martin and is now being sold […]

Openings: Slinkachu – ‘Concrete Ocean’ @ Andipa Gallery

Last Wednesday 2 March saw the opening of the Slinkachu solo exhibition, Concrete Ocean (initially mentioned by us in January), at London’s Andipa Gallery. There was a refreshingly mixed crowd in attendance, with a number of the regular faces at East End shows having dusted off their passports and made the trek over to Knightsbridge. To the gallery’s credit, the complimentary bar never ran out of alcohol, which helped maintain a cheerful atmosphere throughout the evening. As for the art itself, guest reception was enthusiastic. […]

Openings: José Parlá – “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

Armory Week is a time when many art heavyweights of the art world converge on New York so galleries in the area save some of their best artists/exhibitions just for this occasion. On Thursday night, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery launched an epic exhibition for one of AM’s favorites, José Parlá. Entitled “Walls, Diaries and Paintings”, the show (previewed) filled the entire gallery space with José’s calligraphic style. Utilizing the techniques and reference photos which he has accumulated over the years on his travels, Parlá created a […]

Showing: Stik – ‘Single’ @ Subway Gallery

Stik’s simple portrayal of super-flat characters in the realms of the street has been effectively used to portray a variety of emotions in those few simple lines, addressing such issues and themes as race, homelessness, poverty, acceptance and belonging. When it comes to an unconventional artist like Stik, how does his work translate into a gallery setting? Perhaps the first thing to consider is an unconventional gallery space. Single is Stik’s current solo show in the underground location of Subway Gallery, located in London’s Edgware Road. The […]

Armory Week ’11: First Look at Volta Art Fair

This selection of solo shows makes for a more consistent and intensive art viewing experience as compared with other fairs, which is always engaging and challenging. See first images from the Volta fair, after the jump.
