Update: Dalek

Judging from this new ink piece from James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed), he hasn’t completely killed off his space monkeys yet. Of course, his more abstract work also continues with an update of a mural he painted at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar, a completely new piece really. For those who still haven’t gotten enough after perusing the in-progress pics below, you can check out a video of the creation of the mural here. Discuss Dalek here.

Streets: ROA (Vienna)

After a showing last August at INOPERAbLE in Vienna, ROA has been invited back by the gallery to paint a massive 23 m wall in the city center. The Belgium anatomical street specialist decided to render a beautiful collage of local birdlife on a wall in the 9th district that dwarfed the mural he painted at the showspace last time. Discuss ROA here.

Streets: Mike Stilkey – ‘The Zoo Drop’ Mural @ The Standard (DTLA)

Mike Stilkey (interviewed) has just finished a 42 foot long installation at Downtown LA’s mural hotspot outside The Standard hotel and gave us a little background to the piece: ‘A homeless guy came by and told me he hadn’t seen anything like this since the zoo drop. I asked him what the zoo drop was and he said it was when all those planes and helicopters dropped animals out of the sky. Hence the title of the piece just had to be The Zoo Drop.’ Stilkey […]

Streets: Flying Fortress x Nychos (Dublin)

Last weekend in Dublin, Flying Fortress and Nychos collaborated on a sweet mural for the All City Tivoli Jam. This isn’t the first time the two have worked together if you remember the piece they painted several months ago in Vienna entitled “The Anatomy of Mother Bear Giving Birth” when FF visited his friend Austrian friend. This time around, the Fortress’ signature character is again dissected in Nychos’ distinctive style. Discuss Flying Fortress here.

Streets: JR (New York)

After a series of inspiring murals with Jose Parla in Cuba as part of his ever-expanding Wrinkles Of The City project and a TED Talk on the one year anniversary of his wish to turn the world Inside Out, JR has returned to New York for a new large-scale mural. Set next to the popular pedestrian walkway, The High Line, the piece took several days to complete and will be testament to the French photograffeur’s skills in a high-traffic location. Discuss JR here.

Openings: Dave Kinsey – “Lost For Words” @ FFDG

Last Friday evening at FFDG marked the opening of Dave Kinsey’s first solo show in San Francisco in over a decade (previewed). This longtime Los Angeles artist recently moved away from the city, to a much quieter town near the Sequoia National Forrest and has created a body of work that has become more abstract, but still incorporates his recognizable figurative characters. Lost For Words features a series of textured mixed media works on surfaces that range from canvas pieces with slightly crooked frames (which […]

Streets: Vhils (Lisbon)

After putting a new piece up at the revolving mural project Le M.U.R in Paris (covered), Vhils headed home to work on another wall in Lisbon. In contrast to the one in France where he used techniques similar to what you see from the artist for some pieces in gallery shows, this new piece in Portugal sees his classic chisel and hammer technique. Coincidentally, it sounds like he is currently working on upcoming shows in Paris and Lisbon that looks like it might be going in […]

Then the following night, Ryan took across town to Charles Banks Gallery for the next installment of his eye catching UV reactive painting series entitled Women: Blacklight Paintings & Sculptures (See previous stops in LA, NYC,  Miami & PdP). Utilizing his nude figurative studies and taking them […]
