Video / Streets: ABOVE (South Africa)

The Northern Cali-based ABOVE (interviewed) continued his many travels with a recent trip to South Africa. On arrival, the street muralist turned his attention to an issue that he felt strongly about – blood diamonds – and went about figuring what the best way to get his message across was. He ended up convincing the traders at Johannesburg’s largest diamond exporter Jewel City to allow him paint their exterior wall with the slogan “Diamonds Are A Woman’s Best Friend.” What they didn’t realize was that he […]

Streets: Phlegm (Isle of Man)

Street muralist Phlegm recently came across an abandoned pool on the Isle of Man and immediately knew what to do. Befitting the location next to the sea and true to his longstanding love affair with marine imagery, the Sheffield-based artist painted a large sea creature with one of his signature characters in tow. Adding an added layer of complexity was the background filled with years of graf work. More photos after the jump…

Streets: D*Face (New York)

In March, D*Face (interviewed) paid a visit to New York City for a little Armory Week action. Not only did he hit up the Scope Art Fair (more on that later), he also left his mark on the streets by hand painting murals in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. Despite freezing temperatures, D worked the bricks with new imagery to delight the senses in both SOHO & Williamsburg. AM’s Joe Russo was on the scene to catch the action, check it out after the jump.

Rewind: April 2 – April 8

One of the stories dominating AM of recent weeks has been the behind-the-scenes look at Cai Guo-Qiang and his Sky Ladder exhibition opening today at the LA MOCA. We had the pleasure of attending the explosive Chinese artist’s creative sessions (here, here, and here) as well as the setup for his amazing pyrotechnic event last night. Before heading over to check out the exhibition for yourself, take a look at the video above from Art.sy films (via NOWNESS) that sees Cai talk about his choice of […]

Streets: Nick Walker (Paris) Part II

After hitting up Paris with some street work (covered) back in February, Nick Walker (interviewed) has return for more. One of the walls (seen above) he painted was a mirror image of the piece he submitted for the Fifty Fifty group show that opened last week at Parisian showspace Mathgoth Galerie. Take a look at another piece from the Bristol-based artist after the jump…  As a bonus, we added another collaborative piece he painted with SheOne from his last trip there as well.

RISK Paints Santa Monica Home

You may remember last year September, we told you about Risk and Retna (featured) collaborating on painting a house in Santa Monica. That controversial project raised money and awareness for the Heal the Bay Foundation, but drew the wrath of neighbors and resulted some drama and threatened fines from city officials. This time, developer Adam Corlin has commissioned only RISK to cover a new property, minus the scaffolding, with his distinctive abstract style. Look for a more revealing look in May in conjunction with RISK’s upcoming solo show. Discuss Risk here.

Video: JR x Liu Bolin Collaboration (NY)

Last month, we brought you some photos (here & here) from the JR (featured) and Liu Bolin collaboration in New York. For fans out there who want to see more of this complex project, the people at RHC have put together a nice video documenting the entire process from start to finish. For those in NYC, you may want to check out Liu Bolin’s show at Eli Klein (covered) after stopping by the mural. Discuss JR here. Discuss Liu Bolin here.
