Streets: Basel Week Miami ’10 Overview (Part II)

With more murals than you can count at this year’s Art Basel Week in Miami, here is part two (see part one here) of our overview starting with the classic combination of Mac & Retna (who also had a solo show at Primary Projects). Take a look at the results of other artists’ hard work after the jump including Os Gemeos, Ekundayo, Chris Stain, Aiko, Roa, and more…

Viewpoints / Openings: Richard Hambleton pop-up show @ The Dairy, London

Three weeks ago, AM attended the London preview for the pop-up exhibition Richard Hambleton New York. Upon entering the venue, it wasn’t immediately clear whether we’d arrived at an art show or a fashion show. The heaving crowd and large amount of perfume in the air may have disoriented us slightly; we were left hesitating between taking pictures of the art on the walls and the clothes people were wearing. What’s certain is that the event was glamourous, and it’s been a long time since […]

Studio Visit: Supakitch

AM caught up with French-born, Brooklyn-based artist Supakitch at his studio and got a sneak peek of a large new body of work slated for his solo show entitled I Was Born to Be Different, opening in mid-December at Galerie Elegance in Taiwan. Supa is an artistic jack of all trades—painter, print-maker, fashion-designer and tattoo artist. He easily switches between mediums, and even more impressive, mixes them with his love of DJ/hip-hop music and Japanese manga & anime, into his own coherent and unique aesthetic, […]

Streets: Basel Week Miami ’10 Overview (Part I)

Whether the artists were participating on the legal walls like Primary Flight, Wynwood Walls, Graffiti Gone Global, or just freelancing it, there were certainly many new pieces thrown up for this year’s Art Basel Week Miami. You have already seen us focus in on some work from Ron English, Shepard Fairey, Gaia and Jeff Soto, but check more work in Part I of our overview of the murals. Pics we gathered after the jump…

Streets: ROA (Los Angeles) Part II

Unurth recently published a couple new street pieces (with a third huge piece yet to be revealed) from ROA while he was in Los Angeles for his pop up show (covered). We’re sure you can guess that something anatomical is inside this box by the LA River, but take a look at the full reveal after the jump. Also, another piece following the life cycle of mice can be seen outside the gallery space where he showed. And, in case your wondering, wanderlust has hit […]

Streets / Basel Week Miami ’10: Jeff Soto

Our friend Jeff Soto’s (featured) just sent over photos of some of his escapades in Miami with his old graffiti partner Maxx242. In town for Art Basel Week (he is painting a mural for Wynwood Walls and is listed for Primary Flight), you can be sure the Sotofish sure knows how to have a good time (see last year).  Stay away from the alligators this time! More photos after the jump…

Streets / Basel Week Miami ’10: Gaia

It looks like Mr. Gaia is getting things started down in Miami with this piece on 14th Street. The hybrid owl-human-rabbit looks similar to a piece he did for All City Block Party recently and has been layered on top of some Dick Chicken and Shark Toof (you can see this better after the jump…)

Streets / Basel Week Miami ’10: Shepard Fairey

We already brought you a look at the Wynwood Walls project from Shepard Fairey, but now comes more images (North Miami St. & 28th) as he and his posse continue their assault on Miami. Expect more walls as Mr. Obey has plenty of events to keep him in town through the rest of the week including a brunch to honor him for being guest editor of PAPER’s art issue, DJing the Trespass release and signing / Miami New Times Party / Fountain Party, and hosting […]

Studio Visits / Interviews: Greg Lamarche

Although we’ve been familiar with Greg Lamarche’s work for some time, it took seeing his installation at Scope NY 2010 (covered) for us to start to realize that there was definitely much more to his art than cutting and pasting paper. From his obsessive stockpiling of found and vintage papers to his keen ability to highlight specific or overlooked aspects of those materials, such as bar codes or patterns, Lamarche has a unique talent for collage and a clever approach to the medium that is […]
