Setup: Shepard Fairey Mural – “These Parties Disgust Me” for Deitch Projects

AM was on hand to document the creation of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) latest outdoor project on the mural space hosted by Deitch Projects at the corner of Manhattan’s prime Houston & Bowery Street. As teased, the final product was true to the preview image which we first released. Armed with cans of spray paint, vats of wheat paste and a few “cherry pickers”, the Obey crew (Dan, Nick and Zee) braved the unexpected downpours to build this tremendous new mural. Check out our full coverage of their progress after the […]

Streets: Banksy in San Francisco (Part III)

Sir Banksy is on a tear in SF as we round up 6 different spots which he banged out in the past few days. As we see two which we already covered (Part I & Part II), what’s cool is our friends from Warholian did a little hometown research and plotted the exact addresses of each piece. So if you’re lucky enough to be near the Bay area, you should get your GPS out and do a little urban sight seeing. (While they lasts…) See pics of each one […]

Overtime: April 18-24

We are starting to dig Best Ever’s work. Is there such a thing as a cheap Banksy Print?  Yes! David Choe gives an interesting NSFW interview. A May Day flag print from Shepard Fairey, a May Day package from the Ace Hotel, and for those with more means, the original HPM. Graffiti vending machines – A doomed business idea or hoax? An interview with Joe Sorren. A look at Gary Baseman’s and John Casey’s studios. Roa goes big in London. A beautiful video from JR […]

Recommended openings for this weekend

Los Angeles leads the worldwide charge this weekend with a slew of simply massive shows going off. From the return of David Choe at Lazarides’ Beverly Hills pop-up space and Phil Frost’s much anticipated LA solo debut at Known Gallery to a very ambitious show at Scion curated by Roger Gastman, LA is the place to be yet again this weekend. Catch all the action after the jump.

Streets: Banksy in San Francisco (Part II)

Looks like a second possible Banksy piece has been spotted in the Bay Area on Valencia Street with what looks to be an obvious reference to his Cop with Koons Dog stencil in LA that was stolen recently. So, it appears that Mr. B has hit up two out of the three cities in the U.S. where his film premiered (no love for New York?). Take a look at some more detailed shots after the jump of this piece as well as more shots of […]

Streets: Banksy in San Francisco?

Hmm, with the series of premieres already making it’s way across the nation for Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” including LA (covered) and New York (covered), it’s only natural to assume that Banksy could easily whiz up the Cali coast to No Cal and hit up San Francisco. We got a tip from our friends at Warholian that this could be the latest piece from the masked bomber. Located in the Chinatown area, it looks very familiar… What do you think? Discuss Banksy here.

Streets: Shepard Fairey Mural – “These Parties Disgust Me” for Deitch Projects

The Shepard Fairey’s (featured) mural on Bowery & Houston that we first teased here looks to be pretty much finished. Entitled “These Parties Disgust Me”, the piece is about the dysfunction of the two-party political system in Washington and also about encouraging activism. The famous location, hosted by Deitch Projects, was recently the site of an amazing Os Gemeos mural, but now is home to the new Obey mural in preparation for the opening of the “May Day” show opening on May 1st. Check out […]

Studio Visits / Preview: David Choe – “Nothing to Declare” @ LAzarides Beverly Hills

Los Angeles, absence makes the heart grow founder… So, David Choe (featured), welcome home! After a six year hiatus from showing in LA, the man who paddle-boated down the Mississippi, safaried the Congo Jungle, was jailed in Japan, and once exhibited in an ice cream parlor, will be making his homecoming in the heart of Beverly Hills this April 23rd for an exhibition to blow the hinges off. AM had the pleasure of stopping by David Choe’s warehouse/studio earlier this week for a little visit […]

Interviews / Preview: Kristen Schiele – “Elektra” @ Sloan Fine Art

Brooklyn artist Kristen Schiele opens her latest solo exhibition in New York on Wednesday the April 21st at the always great Sloan Fine Art. Entitled “Elektra”, the show promises a collection of paintings depicting 70’s inspired B-Movie actresses in stripped down architectural settings. This is Kristen’s second solo with the gallery since 2008 when she held the honour of the gallery’s inaugural solo exhibition with a body of work entitled “My Dream Is Yours“. AM caught up with Kristen to find out a little more […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Hush – “Passing Through” @ Shooting Gallery

Transatlantic traveling artist Hush (interviewed) is set to pick up another stamp in his passport and some frequent flyer points in a couple of weeks time when his latest solo show entitled “Passing Through” opens at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery on May 1st. AM went over to his Newcastle studio space to check out the work in progress as he was almost about ready to crate and ship the work. The new body of work is set to signal a final farewell to his manga […]
