Last weekend, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his latest solo show “May Day” at the legendary Deitch Projects in New York City and effectively shut down a small part of SoHo with the crowds he drew at the opening night festivities. It seemed as though anyone and everyone who had an interest in art was in attendance. Ana Bagayan should need no introduction to regular readers of AM, her stunning portraiture and contemporary figurative work being a regular feature here as her work continues to evolve with each and every new show. Entitled “Flutter”, Ana’s latest solo exhibition and her first body of work to be shown overseas, opens this weekend on Saturday 8th May at Rome’s Mondo Bizzaro Gallery. Streets: Banksy in SF (Part IV)

Apparently Banksy has been real busy in San Francisco as another five new stencils have been discovered (see previous six here). Combining business with pleasure, the stealthy street artist has hit up famous spots like the Fisherman’s Wharf and Alcatraz. We can’t remember the last time Banksy has gifted one city with so many street pieces, so fans in the Bay Area are definitely the subject of some worldwide jealousy at the moment. Streets / Preview: Blek le Rat

Parisian street art pioneer Blek Le Rat has landed in San Francisco and yesterday afternoon blessed the exterior of the Tenderloin-located White Walls Gallery with a site-specific take on one of his “Beggars” stencils, similar to the works London residents may remember from ’07. His joint show with the artist Above will debut this Saturday at White Walls alongside Hush at Shooting Gallery. Street installation pictures and show preview after the jump.

NYC is the place to be this weekend – Ryden, Julie Heffernan, Faile/Bast, and Shepard Fairey – just a stunning lineup of shows offering something for every taste. On May 1st, White Walls is having a show with French street artist Blek Le Rat. One of the originators of the stencil technique for the street art movement, we are excited to see what he will bring to the good folks of SF in his latest show “Faces in the Mirror”. AM was on hand to document the creation of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) latest outdoor project on the mural space hosted by Deitch Projects at the corner of Manhattan’s prime Houston & Bowery Street. As teased, the final product was true to the preview image which we first released. Armed with cans of spray paint, vats of wheat paste and a few “cherry pickers”, the Obey crew (Dan, Nick and Zee) braved the unexpected downpours to build this tremendous new mural.
