Recap: Rose Beton Festival (Toulouse)

Curated by Tilt, the second edition of the Rose Beton Festival in Toulouse (FR) paid tribute to the graffiti scene. The festival kicked off with an exhibition at Chateau d’Eau featuring the iconic photographs by Martha Cooper & Henry Chalfont (interviewed) as well as emerging photographer Sylvain Fargot. The Musee des Abattoirs is then taken over with installations by Boris Tellegen (covered), Mist, and Craig Costello while Tilt brought back his Voyage Retour car installation that he created during his recent residency at Jardin Rouge in Marrakech. Precisely one month ahead of his upcoming London solo debut, Pejac has revealed his latest series of public interventions around the city. Titled Downside Up, these simple and striking installations are once again proving his ability to create an unexpected twist on common things and reality in general. The new sculptural series consists of old shoes “hanging” from light poles, signs, or other structures in an urban environment. Last month, nine artist headed to Manchester in the UK to participate in Cities of Hope, a project put together by Vestige, a not for profit social justice organization that uses the arts to inspire action on the social issues. The goal was for each link each artist to a local charity that fights for the lives that are affected on their chosen issue. Last week in Tennessee, Mars-1 (featured) & Curiot decided to work on a mural together for the Nashville Walls Project. Located at the new Nashville Sounds Baseball Park and sponsored by Gibson Custom Division, the new piece sees Curiot adapt his style to mesh nicely with Martinez’s organic otherworldly imagery. They had met briefly before Nashville, but had never worked together but based on this result, they should definitely consider more collaborations in the future. Recently in Honolulu, Kamea Hadar unveiled a mural honoring Barack Obama, a former resident of Hawaii, for his service as the 44th President of the United States. The locally-based painter and also co-lead director of POW! WOW! Hawaii, entitled the mural Hapa, a reference to both the POTUS and artist’s mixed heritage. After a series of public interventions the last few years in China, Ludo returned once again to Far East to work on more pieces for his Ephemera project. This time, he is collaborating with non-profit organization called Tencent Foundation and its major media company Tencent QQ.
