Studio Visits: Carl Krull – “Seismic” @ V1 Gallery

Ahead of Carl Krull’s current show at V1 Gallery, which opened over the weekend, we paid a visit to his studio to take a look at the new work. Situated at the top of an ancient building in Copenhagen overlooking the harbor, the impressive work space is a perfect setting to get the creative juices going and has indeed housed other artists throughout its history. Seismic is an appropriate title for Krull’s new work as he uses a very distinctive technique to produce his images […]

Studio Visits: Casey Gray – ‘Of Land & Sea’ @ Circuit 12 Contemporary

We’ve been enthusiastically watching the work of Casey Gray over a number of years, since we first came across his work back in 2009 during Basel Week in Miami. To say his work has progressed since his early stencil compositions is an understatement. Using aerosol paint as his one and only medium, Gray has shifted from the multicoloured stencil explosions we first saw from him through to a level of maturity we’ve not seen elsewhere from a stencil artist. Recent beach portraits and landscapes along with […]

Studio Visits/Previews: Casey Weldon – “Novel Relic” @ Roq la Rue

Nestled deep in the foothills of the Cascades, Casey Weldon paints diligently to finish up several pieces for his solo show Novel Relic, opening at the Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle on August 7th. Themes of nature and old technology collide with a color palette borrowed directly from the television color bars seen in several pieces. The serene scenery around the lakeside property has had a heavy influence in these new paintings, as a native flower morphs into a gramophone and ferns become television […]

Interviews: Chris Valkov – ‘The (sub)Natural Balance’ @ Antler Gallery

Portland-based artist Chris Valkov follows up last year’s solo exhibition at Breeze Block Gallery (covered) with a new body of work entitled The (sub)Natural Balance this week at Portland’s Antler Gallery. Thematically challenging anti-consumerism and ecological topics, his bold work is visually striking with the architectural style he employs within his painting work. AM caught up with Chris to ask a few questions ahead of the show which opens on Thursday, the 31st of July. Arrested Motion (AM): Can you explain a little about your background […]

Interviews: Meryl Pataky ‘The Golden Hour’ @ Shooting Gallery

San Francisco based multi-disciplinary artist Meryl Pataky‘s work first caught our eye a couple of years back with her unique use of neon. Her solo exhibition The Golden Hour is set to open at SF’s Shooting Gallery on Saturday July 12th where she further explores her fascination with all things elemental, using helium gases within the neon works, iron in the framing and staging of the artworks, carbon within her rorschach deer hides and precious periodic elements Gold, Copper and Silver, which are formed during […]

Spaces: The KAWS Studio

Followers of KAWS and his pop culture infused abstractions have always been impressed with his clean lifework and impeccable attention to detail. Taking a look at his Brooklyn studio, designed by Wonderwall in 2013, one can see similarities in the street turned contemporary artist’s taste in architecture. The light-infused and wide open work space will definitely come in handy as he prepares for his show in Los Angeles, coming up in a couple months. Via Hypebeast. Discuss KAWS here.

Studio Visits: Faile – “Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom” @ Gallery Ernst Hilger

A month ago, AM stopped by the Brooklyn studio space of Faile to catch a glimpse of their upcoming show at Gallery Ernst Hilger which opens tomorrow, July 2nd in Austria. Entitled Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom, this fresh body of work continues to push the boundaries defined by the collective. The show focuses on the pure imaginative energy that comes from childhood fantasies – stories and themes such as racing stock cars and flying rocket ships to realms filled with unicorns and beasts. Diverse in technique and mediums, this […]

Studio Visits: Beau Stanton – “Cartography of the Machine” @ Corey Helford

In anticipation of Beau Stanton’s (featured) solo exhibition at Corey Helford Gallery, we bring you look into his Redhook studios for a preview of the upcoming works. Entitled Cartography of the Machine, this show continues his journey of melding old world craftsmanship with his knowledge of architecture, letterpress graphics and antique curiosities. His attention to detail and use of colors brings to life compositions that touch on the 19th century and the intense acidic colors of the 60s & 70s. In this preview, we’re excited to […]

Studio Visits: Femke Hiemstra

AM visited Dutch artist Femke Hiemstra in her home studio in Amsterdam shortly after relaunched her official website, Femtasia.nl, and the release of her latest book Timid Cabbage. We were intrigued to see how her impressive works take form, where she get the ideas for her unique pieces, and what her plans were for the coming year. Hiemstra’s art career started by chance, when her long time job as an illustrator for different Dutch publications got put on hold. This was a result of the ongoing recession and […]

Studio Visits: Michael Kagan – “Thunder in the Distance” @ Joshua Liner

AM recently had the pleasure of visiting the Brooklyn studio of painter Michael Kagan as he prepares for his upcoming exhibition at Joshua Liner Gallery which opens April 3rd. Entitled Thunder in the Distance, this latest body of work continues his exploration of space aviation. Known for painting with oils, Kagan employs an impasto technique which utilizes thick and deliberate strokes. From upclose, the paintings seem to be almost coming apart, but take a few steps back and it appears to re-form tightly into a […]
