Showing: Lucy Sparrow – “Sparrow Mart” @ The Standard, DTLA

The Standard hotel in Downtown LA is currently hosting a big-scale West Coast debut of British artist Lucy Sparrow. As her fifth fully-felted art installation, Sparrow Mart opened doors on August 1st and will stay open for business until the end of the month. We say “open for business” because of the fact that this art installation is a fully functional supermarket, offering a wide range of everyday supplies entirely made from felt and fabric. From bubblegum, fruit and veggies, to different packaging of favorite snacks, […]

Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever (2011)” @ Marciano Art Foundation

For Angeleno’s who missed Yayoi Kusuma’s turn at The Broad (covered) last year, here is your second chance. With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever (2011) features the Japanese artist’s penchant for polka dots in an immersive installation with large fiberglass-reinforced plastic tulips surrounded by floor-to-ceiling red dots. Ranging from over 7 to almost 10 feet tall, the three oversized flowers reinforces the illusion that the viewer has shrunk down to miniature size, an effect amplified by the repeating dots. Openings: Faile & Bast – “Deluxx Fluxx” @ The Belt (Detroit)

Over the weekend, Deluxe Fluxx opened in a new permanent home at The Belt in Detroit, a downtown alleyway with art curated by the Library Street Collective. The immersive art installation & arcade by Brooklyn-based artist duo Faile and artist Bast has traveled to multiple locations around the world, but will be putting down its roots in the Motor City as a bar and music venue. Those hunting for the location should look on the north side of the alley for a door with neon X’s, which […]

Showing: Amabouz Taturo – “A Doll’s House” @ Palais de Tokyo

Recently, those walking by entrance to the Palais de Tokyo in Paris have had their attention drawn to a life size dollhouse installation by Amabouz Taturo (a pseudonym for Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi). The piece is part of the ongoing Childhood: Another banana day for the dream-fish exhibition (title take from a story by J.D. Salinger), that sees a good twenty international artists give their take the theme of the show. Three-level doll’s house constructed from iron and wood can be walked through by guests and features […]

Showing: Alex Chinneck – “Open To The Public” (England)

Over the weekend, another mind-boggling installation was completed by Alex Chinneck in England entitled Open To The Public. Building on the British artist’s series of impossible architectural creations, the abandoned 1960s office building (Brundett House, Tannery Lane, Ashford, Kent, TN23 1PN) was transformed with two enormous zippers “unzipping” the structure. Head over to see it soon if you are in the UK as it will be demolished shortly… Photo credit: Mark Wilmot & Charles Emerson (via Designboom). Discuss Alex Chinneck here.

Openings: JR – “Horizontal” @ Perrotin Gallery (New York)

A few days ago in New York, French artist JR (interviewed) opened a new show entitled Horizontal at Perrotin Gallery. The body of work on display from the versatile artist echoed many of his socially conscious public arts projects from around the world like his installation at the US-Mexico border (covered) and at the Port of La Havre (covered) as well as smaller versions of his kinetic miniature train installation at Château La Coste (covered). Also created for the event was his signature eye pasted on the […]
