Make sure to make plans to head over for the opening if you are in the area to see one of the fastest rising young stars in the field. Discuss Ryan McGinley here.

Upcoming: Marilyn Minter @ Regen Projects

We last caught up with the New York-based Marilyn Minter when she showed at Salon 94 back in 2011 (covered). For her newest solo, opening April 6th at Regen Projects, she will be flexing her photography and painting muscles with five new paintings as well as her black and white series of shots from the 60s that feature her drug addicted mother. Both series of works presented as well as much of Minter’s career has been devoted to examining the pathology of glamour, an appropriate subject […]

Showing: Ten @ Jen Bekman Gallery

Gallerist and Internet art entrepreneur, Jen Bekman, celebrated the 10th anniversary of her gallery with a group show fittingly entitled Ten. For the show, the 20×200 creator assembled an impressive collection of artists who have shown or worked with the gallery over the past decade, including such notable names as Kent Rogowski, Tod Seelie, Alex Soth and Amy Stein. Hung salon-style and filling the intimate Lower East Side space, the works ranged from photography to painting to collage, and characterized Bekman’s style and diverse eye […]

Previews: Jim Mangan – “Time of Nothing” @ Martha Otero Gallery

Presented by the Martha Otero Gallery and opening on March 20 at 6pm is Time of Nothing, a solo exhibition by artist Jim Mangan. Organized by gallery director Julie Machado, the show presents a photographic series of work created during the artist’s part-time residence in Utah. Focusing on nature and painterly landscapes, the work forces the viewer to reconcile between what is real and what is imaginary. The images were taken with a 35mm camera from a single engine Cessna plane only 500 feet off […]

Art Focus: Yao Lu

Our latest Art Focus article introduces the work of Chinese photographer Yao Lu. In particular, his latest series of digitally modified photographs entitled New Landscapes caught our eye – featuring transformed piles of garbage covered in green protective netting tricking the eye (with the placement of additional items) to see traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The work makes a powerful political statement as to the cost of the rapid urbanization of China juxtaposed against the beautiful scenery that has been lost forever because of said modern development. […]

Armory Week ’13: Ryan Foerster @ Clearing

Most galleries at the Armory choose to show pieces from several of their represented artists. However, others go for an all-or-nothing approach by highlighting only one artist. Such was the case with Clearing, who hosted a solo booth of photographs by Brooklyn-based artist Ryan Foerster. And we were glad they did, as it gave us a chance to focus on the work of this very interesting artist. Typical of Foerster’s process, the unframed prints on display were weathered, some covered with dirt, and unceremoniously attached to […]

Openings: Mike Brodie – “A Period of Juvenile Prosperity” @ Yossi Milo

Last week, we saw the return of Mike Brodie to the art world, with the opening of his debut show with Yossi Milo, entitled A Period of Juvenile Prosperity. For those not familiar, Brodie is a self-taught photographer who literally rode the rails, jumping trains and traveling across the country starting in the early 2000’s. When a friend gave him a Polaroid camera, he began to document his life on the road and his fellow travelers, earning himself the nickname “The Polaroid Kidd.” After a […]

Armory Week ’13: Armory Show – First Look (Part II)

Continuing on our visual overview of this gigantic fair… Similar to previous years, this year’s Armory show took place over both Pier 92 and 94. Roughly, the former showcased a refined selection of art from the Modern period, while the latter hosted the much larger group of galleries displaying contemporary works. Regardless at which pier you started off, the cornucopia of blue chip works were enough to ensnare the most seasoned art fair attendee for hours on end. Check out part two of our first day […]

Armory Week ’13: Scope Art Fair – First Look

One of the annual satellite fairs we look forward to during Armory Week is Scope New York. This international fair always brings together a diverse mix of visual, performance, sculptural and photographic art from a range of emerging artists, which we find to be a nice change of pace from the more mainstream contemporary art showcased at the Armory Art Fair. This year, we saw works from street, urban and low brow-pop surrealist artists, including such AM favorites as Ron English, GILF, Brian Viveros and […]
