Releases: Arkitip Issue No. 0056 – JR

It seems like Arkitip has been involved in some pretty cool projects recently including the Andrew Schoultz show at their space in LA and the recent Jose Parla x Incase releases. Word now comes that the next issue (No. 0056) of their comprehensive art magazine will focus on French street photographer and TED prize winner – JR.  The edition will be limited to 1000, consist of 128 pages, and even more exciting, be packaged with two 5 x 7 In. (12.7 x 17.78 cm) original […]

Streets: Merry Christmas from Slinkachu

More Christmas greetings come from street miniature photographer Slinkachu. This piece in London entitled Maz + Joe is a twist on the usual story this time of year with Mary riding something other than a Donkey, but it looks like all the places to sleep are still full. Hopefully, they’ll be able to find a manger to keep warm and deliver their bundle of joy. Another view after the jump…

Merry Christmas from Marilyn Minter

Marilyn Minter, who we just saw at the opening of the Youtube Biennial at the Guggenheim where she was a judge, recently released a 58 x 48 inch vinyl diecut Christmas tree wall-sticker.  The Merry Merry Tree kit features some of Minter’s own eclectic collection of shiny ornaments with the topping star using some of her more classic photo-imagery (seen in detail after the jump). The tree and star are priced at $125 or only the star for $10 all available here with some of […]

Videos: JR – “Women Are Heroes”

It looks like JR has uploaded more tantalizing extracts from his Women Are Heroes movie that debuted at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Part of the street photographer’s 28 Millimètres project, this film chronicles his efforts to bring attention to the plight of downtrodden women everywhere by pasting up large-scale photos in an urban setting (see Paris). More footage after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Hauser & Wirth

As they did at Art Basel Switzerland, Hauser & Wirth brought some spectacular Paul McCarthy pieces to share with the Art Basel Miami Beach attendees.  Luckily, they also exhibited works by other artists in their esteemed program, including Louise Bourgeois, Martin Creed, Subodh Gupta, Mary Heilmann, Roni Horn, Bharti Kher, John McCracken, Joan Mitchell, Roman Signer and Monika Sosnowska. The well-curated booth was a treat to visit and view.  See the works for yourself after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Sprüth Magers

Sprüth Magers – based out of Berlin and London – certainly brought back to the states work by some of America’s best artists.  Their booth included a prominent sculpture by Sterling Ruby, a painting by artist-of-the-hour George Condo (whose paintings seemed to be everywhere at the fair this year), a photo by Cindy Sherman, a large text-based installation by Jenny Holzer, instantly-recognizable John Baldessari and Barbara Kruger pieces, and a painting by Jeff Koons.  See them for yourself after the jump… More after the jump…

Viewpoints / Openings: Richard Hambleton pop-up show @ The Dairy, London

Three weeks ago, AM attended the London preview for the pop-up exhibition Richard Hambleton New York. Upon entering the venue, it wasn’t immediately clear whether we’d arrived at an art show or a fashion show. The heaving crowd and large amount of perfume in the air may have disoriented us slightly; we were left hesitating between taking pictures of the art on the walls and the clothes people were wearing. What’s certain is that the event was glamourous, and it’s been a long time since […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Blum & Poe

Los Angeles contemporary art staple Blum & Poe was yet another in a seemingly never ending stream of must-see booths at the main fair, Art Basel Miami Beach. Of particular interest was a massive new work by Takashi Murakami, exhibiting the Japanese pop art icon’s unique range and continued evolution within his self-branded “superflat” style. A diverse lineup of painters and photographers native to the prestigious gallery, including Zhang Huan, Florian Maier-Aichen, Dave Muller and Henry Taylor, filled out the walls. Check out more of […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Team Gallery

With more time to explore the big fair, Art Basel Miami Beach, a stroll past Team Gallery’s booth (teased) was in order. With an apparent dwindling inventory of works from Ryan McGinley’s newest body of work, Life Adjustment Center (covered), due to the overwhelming success of the series, two of the strongest images from the collection still took center stage and concentrated the majesty of the New York based photographer’s stirring vision. A selection of works from Cory Arcangel, Massimo Grimaldi, Slater Bradley, Gardar Eide […]

Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10 – Ryan McGinley @ Team Gallery

After Team Gallery’s strong efforts across the pond at the Frieze Art Fair last month (covered), the New York gallery will be continuing their participation within the international art fair circuit with a group show at Art Basel Miami Beach. Much like in the London, Ryan McGinley will play a central role at their booth, where already iconic works from his Life Adjustment Center series, like the above “Tracy (Red, White and Blue)”, will be on display. The playful, yet poignant mixture of black and […]
