Over the weekend, the Corey Helford Gallery debuted a new collection of work from artist and visual satirist Ron English (featured). Titled Seasons in Superbia, the show featured the NY-based artist’s ironic take on everything ranging from Peanuts characters to other pop culture icons from the comic book world, film, and animation. This neat little project from Geoff McFetridge, whose work we last ogled at in his solo show in Copenhagen, was brought to our attention recently. The LA-based artist just opened an exhibition at the renowned Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles featuring his paintings on the walls and some special ceramic products, many of which are one of a kind. Openings: Thomas Doyle – “Surface to Air” @ LeBasse Projects

Over the weekend, Lebasse Projects unveiled the new solo exhibition, Surface to Air, by artist Thomas Doyle. The artwork included a variety of photographs and sculptural work which touched upon the themes of destruction in suburbian landscapes. One half of the exhibit featured an incredible collection of miniatures that were created with an insane amount of detail and craftsmanship. Although the pieces were small in size, it demanded the viewer to truly pay close attention to the intricacies and settings which Doyle attempted to recreate. […]

Just over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles unveiled a series of portraits from Travis Louie (interviewed) painted in his signature style and amazing detail to reproduce the look of vintage B&W photographs. Continuing to expand his narrative of pets and their owners, Curious Pets featured unlikely pairings and imaginative creatures all with their own backstories written out by the NY-based artist. Looks like Urban Outfitters is at it again. This time, they are selling a very familiar looking dog figure that looks like one originally created by one of the biggest names in contemporary art. Neither are strangers to lawsuits, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Next Thursday, November 17th (6-8pm), the Paul Kasmin gallery will be presenting a gold set of Ai Weiwei’s bronze sculptures, Zodiac Heads, to the public. Other larger renditions of the twelve animal heads, each depicting a part of the Chinese zodiac, have already been shown at the Pulitzer Fountain (Central Park) in New York and the LACMA in Los Angeles, but this showing will be accompanied by a book launch. Opening last Thursday at Yossi Milo was the latest show by talented NY-based Scandinavian photographer, Simen Johan. Johan has developed a unique method in which he photographs animals and plants in nature preserves and then uses sculptural and digital techniques to seamlessly incorporate them into environments of his creation. On a busy art weekend in Los Angeles, another show to visit on Saturday night, November 12th, is Thomas Doyle’s solo at LeBasse Projects. The NY-based artist will be filling the Culver City showspace with a continuation of his Distillation series, an uncanny intersection of destruction and domestic life in the form of his model-like sculptural work.
