Last week, Takashi Murakami In Wonderland opened at Perrotin Gallery’s Shanghai location, the Japanese artist’s first solo in China. A couple weekends ago, the New York branch of Perrotin Gallery opened a joint exhibition from Emily Mae Smith & Genesis Belanger. A Strange Relative features an intriguing pairing of paintings by Smith and sculptures by Belanger, an amazingly cohesive showing that can be taken as a conversation between the two Brooklyn-based artists. As we mentioned a couple days ago, the Mickey: The True Original Exhibition has opened in New York, celebrating the 90th birthday of one of the most iconic cartoon characters in history. The show is filled with photo-ops, including an amazing piece (seen above) from Daniel Arsham inspired by Thru the Mirror, a Mickey Mouse cartoon short film from 1936 and a Mickey Mouse-themed Cosmic Cavern from Kenny Scharf. Tomorrow (November 10) between 11am-1pm, James Jean (interviewed) will be signing and releasing the Mickey & Minnie Mouse limited edition sculpture set at BAIT Los Angeles to celebrate the 90th birthday of the two Disney cartoons. Created with Good Smile Company, the project transforms the two iconic characters into porcelain succulents frozen in time, shedding and regrowing petals after decades of constant evolution. With the public opening of the heavily anticipated exhibition from KAWS set for tomorrow in NYC, here is a first look at what will be on display at Skarstedt Gallery. GONE features new abstracted paintings that at this point only subtly references the XX and iconic cartoonish characters that used to figure so prominently in the Brookyn-based artist’s work. Tonight at the Arsham/Fieg Gallery inside KITH’s SoHo store in New York City, Jean Jullien will be presenting a solo with an interesting concept. For this showing, the celebrated French graphic designer and illustrator will be displaying miniature paintings alongside appropriately sized sculptures and 3D models of Daniel Arsham and Ronnie Fieg leading to an optical illusion, especially when seen in photos. GIB which is “BIG” spelled backwards, will be on display through November 18. Via Hypebeast.

We first noticed the works of Lu Pingyuan at this year’s Art Basel HK (covered), where he successfully introduced his Look! I’m Picasso! body of work. Half a year later, the Chinese artist has created a limited edition figure of one of the characters from the series, which will be available soon. The entire series was inspired by a single scene from the Toy Story movie in which Mr. Potatohead ends up with his features all twisted and says “Look!
