As part of the $620 million “Dust to Gold” renovation at the Palms Casino Resort, an impressive collection ranging from blue-chip works to street art murals was acquired, commissioned, and deployed throughout the hotel. Showing: Mark Whalen – “Grab Bag” @ Arsham/Fieg Gallery

Arsham/Fieg Gallery in New York currently has a show from Mark Whalen on display entitled Grab Bag. The towering stack pieces are examples of the increasing more sculptural work that he has been experimenting with recently. Whalen further explains – “Lately, I have been formulating new relationships with sculptural work. Grab Bag is a new series of multi-dimensional work that presents non-traditional totems representing life’s folly. With the releases of associated products in recent days, fans of KAWS had been eagerly awaiting the unveiling of his SEEING/WATCHING duo of sculptures in China. Releases: James Jean x Staple – “Washizu” (Bone White Colorway)

If you missed out on the original release of James Jean’s (interviewed) Washizu figure last year, here’s your chance at the second iteration. The Bone White Colorway of the piece created for Staple’s 20th anniversary (produced by Jasper Wong and Mighty Jaxx) will be available starting 12 May 2018, 10am EDT in a 24-hour timed release ($369) with the edition size determined by the number of orders. Standing at 9.8” X 12” X 13, the figure was inspired by a character from Akira Kurosawa’s 1957 masterpiece – Throne of Blood. Head over here at […]

Kris Kuksi x US Marine Corps – “Battles Won” Sculptures

At the end of last year, Kris Kuksi revealed a series of three sculptures he worked on for the United States Marine Corps as part of their recruitment campaign. The Battles Won set features bronzes entitled Nation’s Call, Waged In Will, and the nearly seven feet tall At Their Core (seen in more detail here), which were later donated to the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia where they can be viewed. While in town completing a stunning new mural on the streets of Lisbon (covered), PichiAvo also had a show open at Underdogs Gallery. Entitled Versus, the new exhibition from the Spanish duo features paintings, drawings, and sculptures that form a cohesive body of work showcasing their signature combination of classical art and elements of graffiti culture. Previews: Chris Konecki – “Head On A Swivel” @ 111 Minna

Tonight (May 4th) in San Francisco, Chris Konecki will be opening a new show alongside Sam Flores (covered) at 111 Minna. Head On A Swivel features Konecki’s assemblages of found and repurposed objects, mirroring the imagery found in his street murals. The gritty sculptural pieces are constructed dilapidated structures, boarded up windows, graffiti, barbed wire, fencing, and other elements of urban decay.
