Recap: Art Market San Francisco 2017

A couple weeks ago the seventh edition of Art Market San Francisco returned to the Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion to the delight of collectors and art fans in the Bay Area. Featuring works from artists working with an international selection of 80 different galleries, the event looked to have something for everyone. Last month, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (in association with Thinkspace Gallery) hosted the opening of Robert Williams’ Midwestern debut. Nanzuka Gallery in Tokyo recently opened the long awaited solo by local artist Haroshi (featured). After many successful shows worldwide, Guzo is the first major exhibition for the artist in his hometown. For this showing, the Japanese artist worked on a new concept and created a series of over 20 figurines carved from salvaged skate decks. On April 22nd, Haroshi (featured) will be opening a solo show at Nanzuka in Tokyo entitled Guzo. For his first exhibition with the gallery in Shibuya, the locally-based artist has created 20 of his distinctive sculptures made from “salvaged” skate decks. A couple weeks ago in Manila at Secret Fresh Gallery, Luke Chueh (interviewed) successfully opened his first solo show in the Philippines. Entitled Blood On My Hands, the work on display included paintings, customized sculptural pieces of various sizes, limited edition releases, as well as toys. Today at 9 am EST, Daniel Arsham will be releasing Future Relic 07, a continuation of his series of limited edition sculptural works. The objects are created with repurposed material and are made to look like remains that future archeologists may discover from our time, hence the name. A couple weekends ago, the HOCA Foundation in Hong Kong hosted an opening reception for a new showing from Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) entitled Oh Magic Night. Taking full advantage of the 11,000 exhibition space, the Brooklyn-based artist presented 45 paintings and 10 sculptural works that have been a year in the making. The rich, vibrant, and complex compositions draw from experiences in America as well as from his Japanese ancestry both in subject matter and techniques, some quite impressive in scale.
