Previews: Josh Keyes – “The Hermit” & “Migratory Soul” Figures

After releasing his first sculptural edition last year, Josh Keyes (interviewed) is already working on another two to the delight of his collectors. Based off two of his complimentary paintings The Hermit & Migratory Soul, the two figures are already are in their protoype form. If you remember, these two images were also released through Tiny Showcase as prints earlier this year (covered). Discuss Josh Keyes here.

Paris-based street artist André Saraiva opened a showing at the Museum of Design and Fashion (MUDE) in Lisbon last month. Featuring one of the most recognizable characters in the street art world, an exuberant stick-figure alter ego, Mr. A, as well as many other aspects of his career spanning graffiti, painting, street art, installation, sculpture and film, the exhibition is a retrospective (open through Sept. 28) that brings the artist of Portuguese origin back to his roots.Take a look at the diverse collection of works below… Photo credit: Stick2Target.

Over the weekend, Vered Gallery opened a new showing from Colin Christian (interviewed) entitled Cosplay, a fitting name collectively for the new selection of sculptures and for his work in general. The London-born and now Florida-based artist creates mostly comely female figures out of fiberglass and silicone, an natural offshoot of his artistic vision while operating a business initially making latex clothing for fetish stores around the country. Openings: Gary Baseman – “The Door is Always Open” @ Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei

Last month, Gary Baseman (interviewed) opened a comprehensive retrospective show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei. Entitled The Door Is Always Open, the exhibition mirrored the delightful showing of the same name last year in Los Angeles (covered). Along with over 500 selected pieces, his largest collection of work in one place yet, the opening also included an art performance with his “WildGirls” with a new dance and musical composition. Our next Art Focus feature is on sculptor Jessica Stoller and her provocative porcelain works. Her ornate, Rococo-influenced creations take a traditional medium and add a modern twist to it. The mix of decadent foods, masked characters, signs of decay, BDSM references, voluptuous body parts – all piled to together – challenge the viewer to find beauty in the grotesque. Earlier this month, the Electricity Museum / EDP Foundation in Lisbon hosted the opening of Vhils’ (filmed) expansive museum show, his largest to date. Continuing his recent work encompassing the animal kingdom (see 2013), explosive artist Cai Guo-Qiang has created a new striking installation on the Huangpu River in Shanghai. One of the summer exhibitions that we checked out recently was by Bronx-based graffiti artist Crash, a.k.a. John Matos (featured) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Broken English this freshly minted body of work spanned traditional mediums such as canvas and paper, but also highlights Crash’s dexterity as a graffiti master as he worked his painterly street magic to redo a Mini Cooper in his signature style & visual language. In The Darkness of Mere Being, Chie Yoshii’s first solo show, opened at Roq la Rue in Seattle on July 3rd. Titled after a quote from the great Carl Jung, the art explores many of the Swiss psychotherapist’s hypotheses about the psyche and our subconscious – rich colors emerging from the darkened forest to subjects bathed in moon light.
