For the Venice Biennale, which will officially open this weekend, artist – activist Ai Weiwei has created an installation detailing his 81 days of incarceration by the Chinese government back in 2011. Entitled S.A.C.R.E.D (Supper, Accusers, Cleansing, Ritual, Entropy, and Doubt), the installation at the Sant’Antonin church feature six iron boxes that displays scenes of his captivity in the form of dioramas. Earlier this month, Brendan Monroe (interviewed) opened his new solo show at the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Melting Into the Floor, the new body of work includes paintings on paper and a number of sculptures in wood. Drawing from the name of the show, many of the pieces explore the transformation between liquids, gases, and solids – especially the crossing points at which the alteration occurs. Upcoming: Faile – “Les BALLETS de FAILE” @ Lincoln Center (Part II)

Tonight (May 29th) marks the return of Faile’s Les BALLETS de FAILE to the New York City Ballet at the Lincoln Center with all new works on display. In place of the epic tower installation for the first showing (covered) will be a series of prayer wheels from the Brooklyn duo as well as new paintings. Michael Johansson – “Familiar Abstractions” @ Vigeland-Museet

Last week, we brought a look inside the studio of Michael Johansson in Malmø where he was busy preparing for his show at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway. We now have some photos of the recently closes said exhibition, Familiar Abstractions, which features the tetris-like created cubes made from everyday objects that the Swedish artist is known for. Along with these color-coded assemblages, Johansson also filled in some doorways in with some installation work as well as displayed some grid-like sculptural pieces from rack-like materials. This Saturday (May 25th) marks the return of Eishi Takaoka to Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles for another solo showing. Entitled Waiting, the exhibition will feature the serene floating heads that the Japanese artist has become know for. Each sculpture comprises of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments and although they display an outwardly calm façade, their bottled-up emotions manifest as outlandish formations that are often seen sprouting from each face.

Yesterday saw the opening of Asia’s preeminent art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong, housed in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC). With a strong tilt towards galleries based in the region, the fair boasted over 170 booths with a plethora of worthy art for collectors and fans to enjoy. After a succesful showing for Takashi Murakami in Los Angeles at Blum & Poe (covered), the renowned Japanese artist has returned to Asia for a solo showing at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong. The show which opened last night includes a selection of paintings & sculptures and was timed nicely to welcome in collectors in town for Art Basel (HK edition). Studio Visit: Michael Johansson

Earlier this year, our EU correspondent Henrik Haven headed over to visit Michael Johansson’s studio in Malmø. The Swedish artist was in the midst of preparing for his show Familar Abstractions that just ended at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway (more on this soon). Famous for his hued fabricated cube assemblage made from everyday objects, Johansson’s space was understandably organized by careful color coding.
