A little while back, AM attended the opening for WK Interact’s mid-career survey at Jonathan LeVine’s pop-up outpost. Upstart Spanish street sensation Aryz has been very busy working on outdoor murals since he burst onto the scene a couple years ago. With his focus on the streets, he hasn’t had much time to transition to gallery work (see his 2011 show in Spain), so it will be interesting to see his solo coming up April 19th at Fifty24SF in San Francisco which will apparently might include some sculptural pieces as well. On view at the Brooklyn Museum is Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works, a breath-taking solo exhibition by arguably Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artist, El Anatsui. Born in Ghana and currently working in Nigeria, Anatsui is best known for his vibrant large-scale sculptures made from common discarded materials. This Thursday March 21st, London-based artist Charming Baker will return to Los Angeles for his first showing in five years. For his show Entitled Lie Down I Think I Love You, the artist has made a new series of works exploring the unpredictable nature of love. Every now and then, we come across art that brings out the childlike wonder which we often forget as adults. Dedicated to Coney Island (1984-2002), presented by Andrew Eldin Gallery is definitely that kind of art. Artist Tom Duncan took an incredible 18 years to complete this interactive wonder, which must have been stop and go to some degree, but nevertheless is definitely an accomplishment. Dutch artist Piet Janssen, aka Parra, brought a new body of work to Jonathan Levine Gallery for his debut exhibition there. Entitled Tracy Had a Hard Sunday, this series was composed of works on canvas and paper as well as sculptures, and gave the audience a dose of the provocative post-pop visuals that we’ve come to expect from the artist. One of the best gallery shows we’ve seen lately is the current exhibition at James Cohan by Shinique Smith, entitled Bold As Love. Smith, who is known for her mixed medium sculptures and paintings, draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, ranging from abstract expressionism to graffiti to Eastern religious mandalas. Continuing on our visual overview of this gigantic fair… Similar to previous years, this year’s Armory show took place over both Pier 92 and 94. Roughly, the former showcased a refined selection of art from the Modern period, while the latter hosted the much larger group of galleries displaying contemporary works. It’s that time again in the Big Apple! Spring is here and so is the Armory Art Show. This flagship fair held on the West Side of Manhattan leads a week of nonstop visual action, as collectors from around the globe fly into NYC to storm the fair in hopes of acquiring works from their favorite artists.
