Streets: JR x Daniel Arsham (NYC)

It’s always interesting to watch artists work on collaborations as they try to meld their different techniques and imagery together in a coherent fashion. One of the more successful artists in doing this is street artist and photographer JR (see his joint ventures with Vhils, Os Gemeos, André, Liu Bolin, and José Parlá in the past). The latest artist to work with the French photograffeur is NY-based sculptor Daniel Arsham featuring JR’s famous eye pasted inside Arsham’s sculptural elements. Discuss JR here. Art Focus: Patricia Piccinini

Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. Recently, street sculptor & photographer Slinkachu was asked to participate 20 Years of War Child, a new exhibition celebrating 20 years of the charity’s (War Child) work. He created three installations that he staged in various parts of London, the results of which will be put on display at The British Music Experience through March 28th. Coming up in April, Fondation Cartier continues their history of stellar exhibitions with a showing from acclaimed sculptor Ron Mueck – the first major display of his work that we have seen since last year (covered). Jake & Dinos Chapman, often referred to as the Chapman Brothers, are English artists known for their subversive humor and provocative work often dealing with themes of violence and death. Sam Wolfe Connelly (seen above) recently opened his solo show titled Nocturne at Roq La Rue. Film-like grain permeates his graphite drawings, with subject matter lending itself heavily to the eeriness of a moonlit night spent in the woods, where whispers can be heard if you listen hard enough. Streets: Jonathan Borofsky (Pittsburgh)

This whimsical sculpture from by artist Jonathan Borofsky is entitled Walking to the Sky, a stainless steel and resin piece depicting people walking up a 30 meter high pole. The american sculptor and printmaker who lives and works in Maine has had the piece installed in various places around the world, but now it resides permanently on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University near the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Morewood Avenue in Pittsburgh. Last week, Fecal Face Dot Gallery (FFDG) hosted the opening of Jay Howell’s solo show Enthusiastic Person(previewed). On Howell’s resume is the character designer of Bob’s Burgers and co-creator & art director of the upcoming show, Sanjay and Craig.
