Last week in Berlin, Gestalten hosted installation artist Mark Jenkins’ (interviewed) first solo show in Germany, Glazed Paradise. The American artist staged his startlingly lifelike sculptural works throughout the space to the delight of showgoers as they bravely roamed the gallery area. Also rounding out the night were limited edition offerings of his famous tape sculptures, photographs of his street work, as well as a lecture presentation from Jenkins. Openings: Chris Burden – “Metropolis II” @ LACMA

Last week, Chris Burden’s epic kinetic sculpture, Metropolis II, was revealed to the public at the LACMA. The complex and frenetic creation from the LA-based artist took four years to complete and is a model of a miniature city with an emphasis on an intricate transportation system. Included are 18 roadways, including one 6 lane freeway, train tracks, miniature cars, a network of buildings, which support the equivalent of approximately 100,000 cars circulating every hour. Following our earlier coverage largely restricted to original works at London Art Fair, AM is back with a selection of the limited edition prints and other multiples we spotted at Tuesday’s opening. On Tuesday, AM attended the opening of London Art Fair, an event that focuses on modern British and contemporary art, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. In terms of overall presentation, the most attractive and cohesive booth for us this year is by London’s Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, featuring works by Bridget Riley, Anthony Caro and Kenneth Armitage. Releases: Chet Zar – “The Dead Pope” Bronze

Although there have been resin versions released previously, this newest iteration of Chet Zar (interviewed) limited edition sculpture, The Dead Pope, is in bronze. Fans of the LA-based artist’s macabre style will definitely be interested to know that the sculpt will be available this weekend at the Conjoined II show (more on this later and check out the Conjoined I here) at Copro Gallery this Saturday night, January 21st. Last week, the Mary Boone Gallery hosted the largest collection of Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds that we have seen since his triumphant exhibition in London at the Tate Modern in 2010. Although much smaller in scale when compared to that museum showing which included 100 million pieces, seeing so many of these tiny porcelain seeds piled together really gives the viewer a sense of the amazing amount of work that went into the production.
