Upcoming: “Takashi Murakami’s Superflat Collection” @ Yokohama Museum of Art

Just like his friend KAWS, fellow artist Takashi Murakami will be putting part of his collection on display – scheduled for early next year at the Yokohama Museum of Art in Japan. His eclectic taste in art will be evident to visitors as works from from Shohaku and Rosanjin to Anselm Kiefer will be shown. Coming up on October 31st, Takashi Murakami will be unveiling his first solo exhibition in Japan in over 14 years. The title The 500 Arhats at the Mori Art Museum references the piece that will be the showstopper, a 100-meter-long painting which was created as a thank you to the nation of Qatar, one of the first to offer assistance after the earthquake and tsunami in 2011 in Japan. Along with this massive piece, the Japanese originator of the Superflat movement will be preparing other paintings and sculptural works. […]

CAC Málaga, in collaboration with the British Council, recently opened up the first solo exhibition in Spain from D*Face (interviewed). The London-based artist’s work was seen for the first time in Málaga in 2013 when he created an immense mural for the MAUS Project (covered) along with Shepard Fairey. Openings: Faile x BÄST – “Deluxx Fluxx Arcade” @ Brooklyn Museum

After sharing photos from the Savage/Sacred Young Minds showing at the Brooklyn Museum with you last week, we now have an additional look at the arcade installation there from Faile (featured) and their long time collaborator Bast. After previous iterations seen in places like New York, Miami, Scotland, and London, this immersive experience finally makes an appearance in museum form. Consisting of video games, pinball machines, and foosball tables, the entire interactive environment with signatures imagery are designed by the artists down to the actual games. Discuss Faile here.

Last month, the Brooklyn Museum welcomed in the locally based duo Faile (featured) for a solo show entitled Savage/Sacred Young Minds. The exhibition showed off a wide range of works from the Patrick’s including their Temple project that first made its appearance for PortugalArte ‘10, prayer wheels, large scale paintings, and more pieces all influenced by “a wide variety of sources, including American quilts, folk and Native American art, religious architecture, pulp magazines, comic books, sci-fi movie posters, adult entertainment advertisements, and storefront typography.” Included was also a revival of the Deluxx Fluxx Arcade (more on this […]

Coming up on September 9th, the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane will be hosting Shared Space : KAWS, Karl Wirsun, Tomoo Gokita. Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s Food Face Portraits As Sculptures By Philip Haas

Currently (thru October 18th) at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Philip Haas has installed his larger than life sculptures that take Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s famous face portraits (made from fruits, vegetables, flowers) into the third dimension. Taking inspiration from the Renaissance painter’s The Four Seasons set of paintings, Haas has impressively recreated the characters in 360 degrees and at fifteen feet high and placed them on the south lawn of the museum. Step and Repeat, MOCA’s annual celebration of performance art, comedy, poetry, live music, and other pleasant surprises, returns this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
