After sharing some in-progress shots of the murals going up at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts in association with the Samurai! show (co-curated by Eric Nakamura, editor and founder of Giant Robot Magazine), we now have a look at the finished walls. Audrey Kawasaki took the high road painting one of her beauties on the second floor balcony of the Lancaster Lobby while Mari Inukai went underneath her, also making a play on the Japanese-themed exhibition with her imagery. With the Samurai! show (co-curated by Eric Nakamura, editor and founder of Giant Robot Magazine) at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts now open to the public, the artists invited to paint murals for the exhibition were able to start their efforts last week. One of the artists invited, Andrew Hem, has created large scale public art in the past, but the other two, Audrey Kawasaki and Mari Inukai were not as experienced with mural painting. Tomorrow (May 2nd) at the Seattle Art Museum, Rebirth Of The World, a solo show from Chiho Aoshima, will open to a public. The Takashi Murakami protégé from his Kaikai Kiki Collective is known for her fantasy worlds of ghosts, zombies, and teenage girls, oftentimes created with a digital technique. For this exhibition, the Japanese artist has prepared colorful large-scale dreamscapes printed on plexiglass, 35 drawings on paper, and an animation that will be shown in public for the first time. Tomorrow night (April 17th), the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts will be opening a new show – Samurai! As you can probably deduce from the title, warriors from the medieval and early-modern Japan will be theme of the exhibition. Showing alongside historical Japanese arms and armor from the museum and the John Woodman Higgins collections will be works from contemporary artists invited by guest curator Eric Nakamura (interviewed), editor and founder of Giant Robot Magazine. Coming up on July 10th, the Brooklyn Museum will be opening a show from Faile (featured) entitled Savage/Sacred Young Minds. For this exhibition, the Patrick’s have planned multimedia installations, large-scale paintings, and sculptures as well as a revival of the Deluxx Fluxx Arcade with their long time collaborator Bast. Also making an appearance will be the duo’s Temple project that first made its appearance for PortugalArte ‘10. One of the art-related activities while in town for South by Southwest this year is taking advantage of multiple opportunities to enjoy Tom Sachs’ work. Coming up on March 20th at the CAC Cincinnati, the New York-based Daniel Arsham will be opening a show entitled Remember the Future. Previews: Kehinde Wiley – “A New Republic” @ Brooklyn Museum

Today marks the public opening of Kehinde Wiley’s massive mid-career survey entitled A New Republic at the Brooklyn Museum. For this exhibition, the locally-based artist has a selection of Wiley’s World Stage paintings, which started in 2006, many of which feature his signature “street castings” – taking urban youths off the street and posing & dressing them like the upper crust of society in Renaissance and old master paintings.
