On March 8th, the LSU Museum of Art in Baton Rouge will be opening Slang Aesthetics from Robert Williams, a show that has travelled thru Los Angeles (covered), Sonoma County, and Santa Fe, and the Midwest (covered) already. Presented by Thinkspace Gallery and Josef Zimmerman, the exhibition will feature over 30 oil paintings as well as ephemera and drawings from the “godfather of the lowbrow and pop surrealist art movements.” You can take a look at some other associated events here if you are interested. Kehinde Wiley & Amy Sherald Obama Portraits Unveiled

Recently at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, official paintings of Barack and Michelle Obama were unveiled at a special ceremony. For the first time in the gallery’s history, African American artists were commissioned by the president and first lady for the portraits with Kehinde Wiley working with the Mr. Obama and Amy Sherald capturing Mrs. Obama’s likeness. Hawaii fast approaching, it’s time to preview the annual associated Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2017 & 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Upcoming: Cleon Peterson – “Shadow of Men” @ MCA Denver

This Friday (February 2nd), the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver) will be opening up an exhibition from Cleon Peterson spanning their entire second floor. Featuring the provocative artist’s starkly violent imagery, the show will put on display paintings, sculptures, and murals, including what looks to be a striking “wrap” of the building’s facade. The National Gallery of Victoria recently commissioned Ron Mueck to create an installation for their permanent collection, his most ambitious project to date. Entitled Mass, the work which debuted at the inaugural NGV Triennial, features 100 fibreglass and resin skulls, each one measuring about a meter high. Showing through this weekend at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is a retrospective of Yoshitomo Nara’s career spanning 30 years. Entitled For Better Or Worse, the exhibition includes wide range of work including installations, paintings, sculptures, and drawings.
