This year’s event will honor Brooklyn Museum trustee and music producer Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean and artist and activist Alicia Keys for their outstanding commitment to art in all its forms. Recap: Urban Nation’s “Secret Dinner” Event

On the 22nd of February, Urban Nation Museum for Urban Contemporary Art in Berlin hosted a Secret Dinner event for friends, supporters, contributors and artists participating in their ongoing programs. Around 100 guests from around the globe attended the event organized by the museum director Yasha Young and Berliner Leben, a non-profit foundation that initiated the UN project in 2013. POW! WOW! Hawaii ’17 / Showing: Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Showing in associated POW! WOW! Hawaii through the tomorrow at the Honolulu Museum of Art School is the 4th annual Exploring The New Contemporary Movement group exhibition (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014) curated by Thinkspace. Artists were asked to contribute 12 x 12″ pieces leading to a visually conforming display of works. Hawaii (more info here) kicks off with a re-occurring show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement (see 2016 & 2015 & 2014). As in the past, the format is 12 x 12″ works, leading to a visually congruent display of artworks, some of which were inspired by island life. Previews: Jose Parla – “Roots” @ SCAD Museum

As we mentioned when we covered Jose Parla’s show at YoungArts during Basel Week Miami, the work was going to travel to the SCAD Museum of Art in 2017. That exhibition, entitled Roots, opened today in Georgia at the Savannah College of Art and Design with works ranging from mid-sized canvases and sculptures to large-scale paintings. The Cuban-American artist has created a series of work that represent everything from Cuba’s history to his personal memories and experiences while utilizing his signature textures, urban calligraphy, and palette. Previews: Invader – “Hello, My Game Is…” @ Musée en Herbe

Next month, Invader takes over Le Musée en Herbe in Paris for an exhibition entitled Hello, My Game Is… Over 100 new works will be on show, forming part of the museum’s ongoing program to bring art to all generations with a particular emphasis on the young. Last week, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Malaga) in Spain hosted the first museum retrospective from Mark Ryden (interviewed) entitled Cámara de las Maryville. For those who have seen the exhibition, it certainly has been a House of Wonders with the plethora of small and large-format canvases, drawings, dioramas and sculptures on display for all to enjoy. On December 16th, Mark Ryden (interviewed) will be opening a major exhibition at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Malaga) entitled Cámara de las Maravilla. (for which a replica of the invitation was recently release as a print) Translated as House of Wonders, the exhibition will be the first museum retrospective in Europe for the man known as one of the giants in the Lowbrow art movement.
