Openings: Andrew Schoultz – “Unrest” @ Morgan Lehman

As our readers may have noticed by now, the world thankfully didn’t end over the weekend. However, if those in New York head over to the Morgan Lehman Gallery in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, they will see plenty of apocalyptic imagery in an explosive new show from Andrew Schoultz although he does not paint himself into a corner by making prophetic predictions. Along with his intricately rendered ink and acrylic works on paper, the rapturous (okay, this will be the last pun) new body of work […]

Openings: Mark Dean Veca – C.O.L.A. Exhibition @ LAMAG

Yesterday, on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Barnsdall Park in East Hollywood, the 2011 City of Los Angeles (C.O.L.A.) Individual Artist Fellows showed off their recent work at the LA Municipal Art Gallery. One of those mid-career artists represented is none other than Mark Dean Veca (interviewed), who brought along three large-scale paintings utilizing his signature renditions of “Toile de Jouy” patterns. Of course, his subjects of choice include some of his favorite pop icons – familiar food mascots Tony the Tiger, Charlie the Tuna, […]

Openings: Hush – “Twin” @ New Image Art

After first working on a wall in Melrose (covered) several days ago, it finally came time to reveal Hush’s (interviewed) newest collection of works at New Image Art in West Hollywood. Like his street mural at De La Barracuda, the UK-based artist’s exhibition Twin (previewed), which opened last night, plays with the concepts of duality and symmetry while featuring his intricately textured and multi-facted works combining his Far East influences as well as what looks to be a homage to Gustav Klimpt. The gallery walls […]

Openings: Zhang Huan – “49 Days” @ Blum & Poe

Last night, Culver City gallery-goers were treated to a fascinating collection of brick sculptures from Shanghai and NY based Zhang Huan. The versatile Chinese artist started off as a noted performance artist but has since branched out to many other art forms including the discipline of choice for this 49 Days exhibition at Blum & Poe, also his first solo ever in Los Angeles. The body of work centers around the story of Zhu Gangqiang (Cast-Iron Pig), the nickname given to a pig that survived […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Works on Paper” @ Country Club (Los Angeles)

Opening his Los Angeles spring marathon of exhibitions on Thursday night with Recent Paintings (covered), Ryan McGinness followed things up with Works on Paper (previewed) at Country Club’s local gallery space last night. The show chronicled new and old works on paper, all told exemplifying the notable New York artist’s diversity in composition, imagery, and palette achieved through his trademarked screenprinting methodology. With a host of exhibitions still to come in the ensuing weeks, these two bodies of work served as a welcome reminder to […]

Openings: Sweet Toof – “Dark Horse” @ Factory Fresh

UK street artist Sweet Toof recently visited New York to show his latest series of indoor works at Brooklyn gallery Factory Fresh. Moving his iconic outdoor “Toofy” characters from the gritty urban arena into a more subtle indoor setting, Sweet Toof focused on creating beautiful oil on canvas paintings. Of course, it wouldn’t be a show if there wasn’t some outdoor art. Sweet also hit up the exteriors along with a vehicle beautification campaign. The show lasts until tomorrow, May 22nd, so check it out if […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Recent Paintings” @ Michael Kohn Gallery

Last night, deep in the heart of Los Angeles, marked the beginning of Ryan McGinness’ multi-show assault on the City of Angels. Separated into distinct body of works from his versatile arsenal, the first of seven exhibitions started at Michael Kohn Gallery with some of his signature iconographic work bursting with color and detail entitled simply Recent Paintings. If you love this particular aspect (last seen at Phillips de Pury) of the New York-based artist’s multifaceted work, you certainly do not want to miss this […]

Openings: Tracey Emin – ‘Love is What You Want’ @ Hayward Gallery

The major retrospective of work by Tracey Emin, Love is What You Want, is currently on at London’s Hayward Gallery at Southbank Centre. AM attended the preview on Tuesday evening and was duly impressed. If you’re fond of Emin’s intensely personal, confessional and often provocative art, you’ll love this show. There’s certainly a great deal to take in, covering every phase of her career and the wide diversity of media she’s worked with: installation, embroidered and appliquéd blankets, neon, film, animation, photography, sculpture, painting, drawing […]

Openings: Ai Weiwei @ Lisson Gallery

On Thursday 12 May, AM attended the opening of the Ai Weiwei exhibition at Lisson Gallery (previewed), spread across both of its spaces on Bell Street in West London. The wide selection of work on display — produced over the last six years and agreed with the artist at the beginning of 2011 — does well to illustrate the playful, evocative and provocative nature of the Ai’s output. Given the show’s breadth and overall strength, we’re sticking our neck out and calling it a must-see. […]

Focus: Street Market – Barry McGee, Steve Powers, Todd James – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As part of the MoCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition (covered), Todd James (aka REAS), Barry McGee (aka Ray Fong, Lydia Fong, Robert Pimple, Twist) and Steve Powers (aka ESPO) reunited to re-envision their legendary 2000 Street Market installation at Deitch Projects, which itself was a recreation of the trio’s Indelible Market at the Philadelphia ICA earlier that year. Although the installation is always different, the idea remains the same: an urban environment—complete with stores, streets and all—that reflects the artists’ idea of a hyper-real […]
