Exhibiting alongside Mars-1 (covered) and Miss Van (covered), Gaia took full advantage of the opportunity to show on his largest stage to date by transforming the Project Room at Jonathan Levine Gallery into dynamic visual feast. We haven’t seen an exhibition in person from Nathan Spoor in a while (although we did enjoy his curation of the Suggestivism show), so we headed over to the Bold Hype Gallery in New York a couple weeks ago to check out his new body of work – Phantom Passport. We were impressed with the preview images we saw from Tat Ito’s debut New York solo show, Momento Mori, at the Joshua Liner Gallery, but were still blown away after seeing the paintings in person at the opening. Ito’s new paintings retain much of what we loved in his previous work, such as the humorous and unique costumed characters and delicate silver-leafed backgrounds. Furthering along his INSIDEOUT initiative, a global art project that encourages people to utilize the artist’s signature methodology – printed black and white poster pasted outdoors – to portray their local heroes as dramatically represented in NYC recently, JR has created an interactive installation within the historic George Pompidou Museum in Paris that is now open to the public. For the those with voyeuristic tendencies out there, the Carmichael Gallery recently hosted the opening for a show that might fit your artistic taste. Breach of Privacy features the work of five NY-based artists – Yasmine Chatila, Hilo Chen, Adam Krueger, Alyssa Monks and Jaclyn Santos – and their explorations of the nature of voyeurism with their renditions and glimpses of private moments from afar all presented over a range of mediums including oils, mixed media, and photography. A couple weeks back, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted a new body of work from Mars-1′s (featured) alongside Miss Van’s Bailarinas (covered). For this show, entitled Afterglow, Mars-1 elected to paint several large-scale, acrylic works on linen allowing him to expound on a grander scale his geometric visions of otherworldly landscapes. AM attended the opening night for Cleon Peterson’s show White Flag at Joshua Liner Gallery a couple weeks ago. Being the first solo exhibition in New York, we were impressed by the sheer size and raw graphics displayed by Cleon. His color choices and figure composition seems to hold nothing back hitting the viewers right between the eyes with pure emotions. Openings: “Flight & Fable” @ Corey Helford Gallery

A couple Saturdays ago, a trio of artists opened up their joint show in Culver City at the Corey Helford Gallery. Featuring the talents of Krista Huot, Isabel Samaras, and Sarah Folkman, the exhibition entitled Flight & Fable was so named because of the works of Huot features her signature take on fairy tales while Samaras and Folkman both incorporated birds and elements of flight in their new paintings.
